this girl i sat next to in high school had it a few times. she was kinda messed up - not really sure if that was attributable to pre- or post-ECT circumstances. i think she's got a pretty stable life nowadays 7/15/2011 11:32:26 PM |

yep, its still done today, under anesthesia though.
we had this really perplexing comatose patient a few years ago. we tested this person for everything under the sun, including rabies. tried multiple medications, but we couldnt find a reason for the coma.
One day the psych team was in the unit for another patient, and the docs mentioned this patient. long story short, they said lets try ECT.
It fucking worked, the person had catatonic schizophrenia. We were able to extubate a few days later.
of course this person still creeped us all out with their demonic laugh. 7/17/2011 4:47:19 AM |

I have a family member who has had ECT several times. After the birth of her daughter, she suffered from postpartum psychosis and has never been the same. ECT has been used as a last ditch treatment effort, but it has not wrought any significant changes. It briefly settles her for a period of time and erases parts of her memory, but she always sinks back into depression. 7/17/2011 8:30:02 AM |
