The Tor software protects you by bouncing your communications around a distributed network of relays run by volunteers all around the world: it prevents somebody watching your Internet connection from learning what sites you visit, it prevents the sites you visit from learning your physical location, and it lets you access sites which are blocked.
The Tor Browser Bundle lets you use Tor on Windows, Mac OS X, or Linux without needing to install any software. It can run off a USB flash drive, comes with a pre-configured web browser, and is self-contained. The Tor IM Browser Bundle additionally allows instant messaging and chat over Tor. If you would prefer to use your existing web browser, install Tor permanently, or if you don't use Windows, see the other ways to download Tor.
Freedom House has produced a video on how to find and use the Tor Browser Bundle. If you don't see a video below, view it at Youtube . Know of a better video or one translated into your language? Let us know!" |

^Yes, because only criminals are interested in remaining anonymous while online .
You don't give anyone access to your connection by installing the browser, joining the packet relay network is an entirely separate operation. 7/25/2011 2:43:11 PM |

I was talking about this in a lesson I'm writing. I think it's main intent is to allow freedom of internet access within heavily regulated networks, i.e. places like North Korea. 7/25/2011 3:23:52 PM |

So whats the deal with Tor? I thought at one time it cost money to use the service. Any reason to not connect through Tor for certain activities? 1/21/2012 10:26:09 PM |

I don't recall Tor ever costing money; anyway, if you want a fast connection or use of anything plugin-based (like YouTube), don't use Tor.
This is probably why the Tor Project is promoting use of the Browser Bundle over a system-wide installation of Tor: Some shit just needs to get done without all that overhead. 1/21/2012 10:34:51 PM |
