Thoughts? I'm looking at a 4 door.

What is yall's take on the reliability of these things?

I read that the gti won some shit on consumer reports but i tend to think their rating scale is somewhat terrible.

I have a 4 door '11 Golf TDI. I have little doubt that my engine will be kicking for a long time, though there is a recent thing out about fuel leaks around the injectors... Obviously the GTI engine is a lot different. Body/chassis wise mine has been good with no problems at all at 14k. The service guy at the dealership said the Golf and Toureg have been the best so far out of the new models. As with buying any car with lots of electronic systems you are going to have to expect problems down the road. I'd suggest buying the 100k warranty if you intend on keeping it a while.

it seems to me that you'll know before the warranty is out from the vw people i know some our problem free their entire life and a few have been EXTREMELY problematic.

Drive it till the warranty expires or there abouts and then sell it if you've had to take it in a lot under warranty and keep it if you didn't

I think the 2.0t is pretty solid though now they had some issues when they first came out but they've been resolved for the most part.

I'd consider buying a used one with some sort of certified warranty. I think the factory is only 3/36 now right? I had a 2008, supposedly the last year of the 4/60 warranty. In the ~3 years I had it, nothing tooo major happened, the radio went out and had to be replaced, and some AC pressure sensor. Wouldn't trust it out of warranty though...part of the reason I got a new car.

Does VW cover all maintenance for the first 3 years now? For some reason I thought they did.

no cost for scheduled maintenance for 3/36. "Carefree Maintenance Program"

personally i'd rather have the 4/60 back than get free maintenance . Hell i doubt theres much scheduled maintenance outside of oil changes and visual checks for the first 36k.

they changed a lot when they switched from the FSI to the TSI (mid 2008)

not just fixing things that were common failures, but significant changes in the design of the engine and fuel system

i haven't heard of many problems with MK6, but i do know a guy that just had some stuff fixed under warranty on his 2010. iirc it was a wiring harness and a battery.

^ I cant speak for the reliability but I tested everything in its class about 1.5 years ago (spring 2010) and was definitely impressed with the car. I'm still not sold on its looks, but it drove incredibly well, had enough pep, and the interior was well ahead of the competitors. Unless you want ms3 or wrx power, which is tempting admittedly but much less refined, I think this is the best car in the range if buying new.

the 2.0t, with a chip (~$750ish installed), will make 250+bhp and 300ish tq if power is a factor. there is a possibility of having a warranty issue, but the guy with the MK6 i mentioned before has been chipped for a while now and hasn't had any issues getting stuff fixed under warranty.

keep in mind, on the 2010+ models, it is necessary to open the ecu to access the boot pin in order to flash the software onto the car, so it is more involved than some earlier models (which can be flashed through obd2 port)
