Who the hell came up with this?
My family has been here since Tennessee was a part of NC. The first time I heard this was on a trip to Hershey, PA, where some PA douche at a Dairy Queen heard my dad's accent and asked where he was from. When my dad said "North Carolina", the PA guy goes "North Cackalacky!" and my dad immediately thought he was making fun of him and didn't respond. That was the first time I heard anyone say that.
Is this some sort of faux-folksy thing that Yankees that moved here came up with? Is it specific to a certain part of NC? It's sure as hell not something from the mountains. 8/17/2011 11:47:47 AM |

People here called NC Cackalacky for several months in 2001.
I was not aware that it was still done. 8/17/2011 11:55:29 AM |

The same people came up with "Cackalacky" for North Carolina as "G-Vegas" for Greenville

Hey, groups don't like it when outside groups try to impose anything on them.
I'm just trying to see if it is, in fact, native to some other part of NC.
It's about as annoying as when the Man Vs. Food guy came to Raleigh and dressed up in NC State, Duke, and UNC gear together. Get that shit out of here.
And I still regard anyone who lives in NC but feels the need to hold on to their Red Wings or Penguins fandom as an interloper (hey, at least I'm not like my dad, who wants the News and Observer to put all hockey news in a separate sports section so he doesn't have to see it mixed with his football and racing news).

i went to the museum of modern art with my parents one time, and when we were pulling into the garage the attendant saw the nc state front plate and said "hey, no one from cackalacky allowed", but he was joking and we all had a good smile about it. you're just being a jerk about it. 8/17/2011 12:43:51 PM |

what's worse is when people refer to the state as Carolina
I watched The Dilemma the other night (starring Vince Vaughn and Kevin James) and when they are at the Chicago Blackhawks game, the announcer mentions winning a trip to the 2011 All Star Game in CAROLINA
IT WAS IN NORTH CAROLINA, DAMMIT

the name of the team is one thing...the location is another. I never hear people on TV talking about playing the Carolina Panthers in Carolina. 8/17/2011 12:52:26 PM |

Not really. You got a degree from NC State. That's always going to be with you.

Quote : | "Let me pause to explain the “North Cackalacky” title to this posting. “Cackalacky” is a slang, and lately somewhat hip, riff on “Carolina,” especially among the thousands of soldiers who endure basic training at Fort Bragg in the state’s woodsy midsection, and among glib radio deejays who just like the way “Cackalacky” clicks off the tongue. Nobody knows who first coined the term, but at least one North Carolina company that makes condiments has adopted it." |

I'm generally not a fan. It's overly familiar and kinda diminutive.
It's like if you introduce yourself to someone as "John," and they're like, "Oh, what's up, Jonalonadingdong?!?!"

I thought it came about with the troops being trained at Fort Bragg during the Vietnam War...meaning it was probably slang, not intended to be negative, and made up by carpetbaggers 8/17/2011 4:18:45 PM |

I think this was 1999? I had literally not heard it prior to then, and I grew up in Johnston County before they started building all the developments around Clayton that are considered suburbs of Raleigh today. There really were no people from outside the southern US living there then, at least not in significant numbers. It was a gradual change that occurred in the 90s.
It is, in my experience, not a common expression among native North Carolinians for their state.
My whole family is from here save my dad's mom and none of them ever used it. None of my friends used it, either.
I'm attempting to see if anyone else's family or friends that are from NC actually used it growing up.
