Anyone? How difficult is the language barrier? Should I go around in a Taxi or can I use public transportation easily? Are the signs/boards also in English?

Never been, but it reminds me of the 'Engrish' signs throughout China.
Apparently the massively fail in the translation department. Might see a few of these

i am under the impression that very little english signage exists in china outside of tourist type places (and engrish is right, lol) 8/18/2011 12:23:45 AM |

the hotel you still stay at will give you a card for directions back to the hotel. Just give that to the driver. There is a strip where all the techno/american bars are at. Good times.
Also, the food sucks, but thankfully there are pizza huts and kfc's over there. And you might think this is bad, but its not because they are very different then the ones here in the US. Pizza hut over there is a sit down restaurant with semi-gourmetish food.
Lastly, karaoke places at night are not karaoke places. 8/18/2011 8:50:36 AM |

I was in Hangzhou last year. I don't know what you will be doing over there or for how long you will be there.
You can definitely use a taxi. They are DIRT cheap compared to America. I think in hangzhou it was 10 yuan for the first km and the rate of increase is small. I crossed the city for 26 yuan. That is about 4 or so dollars. The biggest problem you will run into is language. The taxi cab drivers know NO English. Also. Be VERY careful of the taxi cab drivers. They will try to rip you off. Keep your eye on the meter at ALL times. If they turn it off, get them to stop the cab immediately and pay what you saw. Most will be honest, but you might run into one asshole, especially if you party at night (which I would only recommend doing as a group). Definitely don't get wasted while in China. You will only make an ass out of yourself.
But for the cab drivers, just get the location written in Chinese and hand it to the driver. It should work nicely.
I'll make a more formal post after work, but hopefully this will give you something to think about. 8/18/2011 12:47:37 PM |

Thanks all. ^^I will be there for little over a week during this trip. Airport pickup and week days transportation is arranged by work, so it won't be a problem. Weekends, I want to look around a little a bit on my own. I am being transfered to Nanjing for 3 years in a few months.

^^ During the next week trip I will be staying in Gulou district on Zhong Yang rd. I have no idea right now where I will be staying when I move for the 3 year assignment. While I am there I am going to look around and prepare for the 3 year move. Do you suggest any particular places for a small family of 2 + 1 infant.

Find a place with american toilets. I stayed at a school hotel and we had american toilets. All the other places had the hole in the ground toilets and they were disgusting and dirty. They also don't provide toilet paper so make sure to bring your own if you go out and think you'll have to drop one. Also, dryers and washers are almost non-existent there. We had to pay people to wash our stuff and dry it, but that cost a lot of money,.
I really don't know where you could live with a family, but all the family units/apt I saw were small and packed. I'm not sure I would go and live in china with a small child. The air quality is really bad so if your child has issues to begin with they may worsen here.
