Also, you will see a prime example of a waning gibbous, which is less dirty than it sounds.

Just went outside to take some pictures and couldn't get the setting on my camera correct.

And...I couldn't see any bright dot under the Moon. I saw something pretty bright by itself about 27 degrees up and to the right of the Moon, though.

According to Google Sky Map, it is Jupiter.

if you have good binoculars or a scope, you can see some of the moons around jupiter.

Just realized I missed the ISS. Watched jupiter all week in florida, super cool, and saw two amazing shooting stars.

One was during a kick ass thunderstorm on the ocean, we were on the beach watching the storm when I see the shooting star, it was magical!

What I like about the heavens-above site is that it gives the visible magnitudes, so I can compare it with the magnitude of visible stars I know, to determine whether or not I will be able to see it in the light-polluted city. It should be magnitude -3.5, so very visible.

Quote :
"at one extreme the Sun is magnitude (mag.) -27 and some of the faintest observed stars around mag. +24. The full moon is mag. -12.5, Sirius the brightest star in the night sky mag. -1.5, whilst the faintest stars visible to the naked eye under good conditions are around mag. +6. "

Here's what Raleigh should get:

Event Time Altitude Azimuth Distance (km)

Rises above horizon 19:14:31 -0° 228° (SW ) 2,228
Reaches 10° altitude 19:16:33 10° 228° (SW ) 1,387
Maximum altitude 19:19:39 88° 313° (NW ) 384
Enters shadow 19:22:46 10° 48° (NE ) 1,395

oh. well yeah that probably is useful. i'm in a small city & while we have light pollution it's not enough of a problem for something like this.

Is there anything super bright tonight? I see something that looks a heck of a lot like the ISS did (very bright large star) but it's not moving.

why are the ISS passes so short (no longer than 5 mins at first glance)? and how can there be 2 passes within a 2-hour window?
