Sounds like the sales manager doesnt want to put in the time to get new contacts and clients, so he will take advantage on somebody that thinks this will actually benefit their career. Are there credits involved? What is the company? I would assume that since it is a sales position, it is not non-profit.
Why the hell would somebody do all of the marketing work so somebody else can make money off of it?
and im pretty sure this is illegal 8/23/2011 7:48:35 AM |

^^What's illegal about it? There are unpaid internships in just about any field. You're getting paid with "experience" and all that BS. 8/23/2011 9:06:51 AM |

all of these rules must be followed
1. The internship, even though it includes actual operation of the facilities of the employer, is similar to training which would be given in an educational environment; 2. The internship experience is for the benefit of the intern; 3. The intern does not displace regular employees, but works under close supervision of existing staff; 4. The employer that provides the training derives no immediate advantage from the activities of the intern; and on occasion its operations may actually be impeded; 5. The intern is not necessarily entitled to a job at the conclusion of the internship; and 6. The employer and the intern understand that the intern is not entitled to wages for the time spent in the internship.8/23/2011 1:56:25 PM |

Then wouldn't every unpaid intern violate those rules?
And where are those "rules" from? 8/23/2011 2:34:01 PM |

^The "Dept of Labor"
Quote : | "npaid summer internships can benefit businesses and students, but only if all parties follow the rules.
Jay Zweig, partner and chairman of the employment group in the Phoenix office of global law firm Bryan Cave, is an expert on the Department of Labor’s rules governing unpaid internships.
Here are his tips on how businesses can avoid legal problems when engaging a student for such positions:
Training received by the intern must be for his or her benefit. Training must be general, not for the immediate advantage of the business, and it may even slow normal operations. Interns can’t be used to replace paid employees. Interns must be closely supervised or mentored. Interns can do real work as long as they are closely supervised, are learning and aren’t necessarily creating a final product. Both the intern and the business must agree that the internship will be unpaid. Both parties must agree that no job is promised at the end of the internship. High schools, technical schools and colleges can partner with businesses to set up compliant unpaid internships in which the student receives course credit. This lends credibility to the internship’s benefit for the student. Decide beforehand if the business has the time and personnel to closely supervise and mentor an unpaid intern. When in doubt, businesses can avoid legal problems by paying interns at least minimum wage." |

Hah. If those are actually rules, instead of tips, as the article calls them, then every legal internship out there that is unpaid is illegal (and a great majority of legal internships are unpaid). 8/23/2011 3:42:56 PM |

One time, I took this summer internship and they paid me in food. Suffice to say, they grossly underestimated how much a skinny Asian kid can eat, specially when it's free. Even now, the boss there still emails me from time to time and asks if I can still hold the fort down. I always respond with "you pay for the buffet and I'll put a 300lb slob to shame" 8/25/2011 9:09:30 PM |
