Let it age before buying. I pre-ordered it and it's buggy. You have to manually go into Online mode and change the settings to Single-player, otherwise you will lag out and lose FPS and/or crash. The game defaults to cooperative, which is a lagfest.

However, it runs like butter on my 120Hz Input Acer Monitor at a sustained 120 FPS with my gtx580 lightning extreme @ Max Settings. The environment is really beautiful as well.

Cooperative is currently hosed, but it has potential to be really cool. It finds people that are on the same quests as you AND are regionally close to you. So your pings will theoretically remain lower and you can play quests together seamlessly. It's like a mixture of Diablo, and left 4 dead 2, minus special infected and... well... Diablo.

Not impressed at all with this game. I can't help but be bored with it and I am only a few hours into it. Picked it up new yesterday and it's only only worth $25 store credit the second day doesn't sound to promising for this.

I guess in my case no press is bad press. I just heard about the game for the first time because of the bugs/problems and the subsequent launch day patch, now I'm interested. I'll have to check out what kind of things you can do by leveling your character because at the surface it doesn't look like the kind of game that lends itself to skills.

Also might end up waiting several months until the resolve all the larger problems.

it seems pretty simple. not sure if it varies by person, but basically the rap dude has 3 trees to either increase his defense (extra regen, less damage), increase combat (extra crits, dmg, etc), or some fury tree which looks like special attacks.

adds a little flavor.

It's basically non stop zombie bashing, which is what makes it so much like Diablo in my mind. The skill trees are interesting too. Right now I don't regret my purchase, but at first, I did. If you give the Dev team a month or two, it has a lot of potential to be a good game. Great game... not sure yet.

So, for those of you that have played the game (I've played a little)...

1) In the beginning there are people trapped in a hut. I have the feeling that there will be an extremely lame, annoying, and craptastic escort mission to get everyone out of the hut at some point. The question is, can I just free roam the island as much as I want without doing any missions to advance the hut plot? Will the hut be overran if I just ignore it for hours and level a bit?

2) What's the point of money? To mod weapons? For that matter, why does it cost money to put some duct tape on a boat oar?

3) Any time sensitive missions like in Dead Rising 2? I hated that. My style is more free roam/explore at a very leisurely pace. I've already heard something about rushing to get someone some insulin... I hope there's no more rushrushrushrushrushrushrush to get that zombrex bullcrap.

I think the quests just give you unique items and better experience, but you can do what you want.

For example, when I did the hut quest, I got a kickass purple hammer thing. The thing I don't like right off the bat is the deterioration rates in this game seem to be too fast. Everything falls apart quickly, and unlike fallout, I cannot repair anything on the fly.

Granted, I'm still playing a lot of it, because it's a lot of fun just running around exploring the island and bashing zombies heads in for slow motion effects, lol.

Have you fought any thugs yet? Had to use my Rage ability on 2.

Played a little more and my questions are largely answered. It doesn't look like NPCs can die due to time restrictive missions and you can free roam all the areas that are open depending on the chapter you're in without fear of NPCs being overran.

It's beginning to look like grinding for levels is a waste of time, since zombies apparently scale with you.

I haven't gotten one decent quest reward. Usually some generic cleaver or some such.

I've played this game almost nonstop yesterday, finally at lvl 27 and on Chapter 6. But yeah jbtilley, I agree that money seems like an odd thing to use in a zombie apocalyptic world as currency. Almost every NPC states "here have this, it's not like I'm gonna need it anymore" after every quest. I mean use something like snack bars or water bottles or something as currency. Or like in 2033, use ammo as currency (which I like this idea). But its actually pretty useful since most of my good weapons comes from the merchants right now. And upgrading them takes some $$$. Firearms seem to cost $texas.

The most annoying first thing about this game is that the survivors that you play all seem to have this "immunity" deal to zombies and also the fact that everyone is clueless to wtf is going on. Its the undead, say its the undead or zombies and not "What are those things?!?!?" Its so cliche.

I was a little disappointed that the game isn't set in one giant world map like oblivion, fallout or just cause 2, so you just can't roam around the "whole island" without doing missions to progress the "story" to gain access to other sections. However, each place is pretty large enough to explore and still have the expansive feeling.

Another big let down is how disjointed the game feels in movement controls, specifically for firearms. I wish you could have control over the x and y axis separately. I usually set my y to be about 10% less sensitive to feel fluid, but I have gotten used to the firing controls. I also wish that you could hold more ammo than just 50 bullets of each gun type (yes, you can use the skill tree to add more, but that's only 10 bullets/shells per level). Also, why can't a one shot in the head put down zombies like humans? It only makes sense to use firearms on other enemy humans.

Then there's other small annoying things wrong with the game; glitches here and there, but the most annoying thing is the clipping issues. If you throw your knife at a zombie and that part of the body falls into a wall or a bush, you can't pick the item up at all. You have to kick the zombie's body out of the way, which seems retarded. I also wished the game had a better inventory management system and key bind-able weapon slots. HOW retarded where they to completely fuck that up? You can't even scroll up and down, only down in one way to your specific weapon.

Another thing I hate is that everything in the world respawns/refreshes wayyyy to fast. I mean I'll walk down a road, clear it of zombies, walk 50 meters, then turn back and everything I killed 5 mins before is back. Even searchable items respawn really fast, although more like 15 mins.

I also don't like the fact that everything (cept for firearms) have a durability rating of a toothpick. On one of my knifes, each kill drains it by 10%!!! And if I want to use it as my main melee weapon, I have to find a workbench and repair it in mid battle (which actually is quite easily accessible). Repair also cost $$$ which I guess the developers though would make money more useful in the game, but its just more of a pain in the ass to keep up. It's odd that throwing your weapon at zombies does not take any of the durability away so I end up just stacking up on knifes in my inventory and continuously throw them.

And don't get me started on having NO manual saves?!?! WTF is with this checkpoint system?

Besides these flaws, its mostly a fun game. What this game excels at is melee and throwing shit at zombies. And some of the common zombies actually do pose a threat if you try to take on 4 or more at a time, specially higher level zombies. They will counter your hits and throw weapons at you. Fuck, I thought zombies lacked the necessary dexterity for those actions, but its fun.

For the most part I agree with all of this ^

I haven't made it as far as you, I'm only level 10 right now. One of the coolest parts of the game that you didn't mention was the crafting. I took a Green Baseball Bat ( In order of Epicness -> Light Green/Green/Blue/Purple) and made it into a motor-powered Buzzsaw of death. It's pretty awesome actually, there are tons of blueprints that you get from quests, or just randomly, and it allows you to tinker custom weapons from the useless crap you find around the island. I also just made a bomb out of 2 deodorants canisters and duct tape. It definitely has a MacGyver feel to it, I can't wait to see what I can make with nails, car parts, and lighter fluid. So far the "mini-bosses" are all the same. They are called Thugs, and they are pretty tough to take down without special abilities or Molotov cocktails. The main reason to do the quests is to access certain areas and see cool cut scenes. This is a solid game, but it does leave some things to be desired. It's a huge sandbox (pun intended) and it's sure to have DLC. I wish they had more intelligent mini-bosses, but I suppose that flies in the face of zombie-lore. There are basically a few versions of zombies. Commons without weapons, commons with weapons, thugs, and as you level, all the aforementioned zombie types with better AI.

Playing with other players can be really fun too. It's pretty fun having 4 players massacre a mob of zombies simultaneously. Very actiony.

I didn't really touch on the crafting tools of the game because:
1.) you honestly don't get a lot of mods early in the game (even at lvl27, I only have like 15 mods and thats doing every main and side quest).

2.) Its limited to being used at the craft table. I donno why they just didn't make it so you can craft simple stuff out in the field and use the craft table for more complicated maps. I mean, I know how to make molotov cocktails, why can't I just put the damn rag in the bottle without a work bench and tools?

3.) not as sophisticated as dead rising 2's craft system, which was 1000 better and more expansive than this game.

4.) its practically down right retarded that your player can hold an infinite amount of misc items. most of the useless shit I find, I donno if they are useful or not in this game so I just horde it all and there's no negative part to that in this game (unlike fallout where everything has a weight).

Although, the mods are pimp though. I got a few blue and purple knifes with a lvl2 high voltage mod that deals double electric damage with a 4% critical strike (which is electrocution: it actually deals AOE splash damage). The base dmg of my knifes is around 467+340 each then the added dmg with the mod. A critical head shot from one of them deals something like 3100hp, which usually takes down most things in one hit.

Also, I got the firearms skill which allows for stomping action. It's pretty a badass melee move that does a one hit kill to the head if the zombies are down on the ground. And the rage move gunslinger is a very useful skill for the black cop... which she seems to change accent constantly from an all attitude type of hood girl to a wholesome Australian. Its got me rolling some lols quite a few time with the bad voice acting.

SON OF A BITCH...
I was playing an escort mission and the dude died halfway through, but at the time I was in the middle of killing a few zombies. I had thrown three knifes at the incoming zombies and when the mission decided to reset from the last checkpoint, I LOST MY TOP THREE MELEE WEAPONS!?!?! WTF

I have to use my older weapons that only deal half as much, this gonna suck.

EDIT, redid the mission halfway through again and the dude died again, but this time I was down to 1 bar of health and again, I lost even more weapons. So every time I restart this mission, a spawned zombie next to me kills me instantly. I don't even have time to medpack up. This game blows. The lack of a good save feature really kills it.

I played until I got up to level 10. I still haven't come across a weapon or blueprints to a weapon that are anything special. I guess I just have a string of extremely bad luck. The only non regular item I have is an orange wrench and it sucks compared to the generic knives that are lying around.

^ Re: #4. Yeah, I horde because I suspect that most things will be used for crafting. Also people give quests for items all the time. Go get me 5 bandages. Oh, it turns out I already have like 20 of them, so here you go. Instant completed quest without additional fetching.

It's a decent game, but I can see how the novelty is going to wear out fairly quick. To the guy above, you may want to just rent this one. It's certainly fun but I imagine that I'll be bored with this one before I can complete a second playthrough.

So far my small complaints are:

1) Just like what everyone else is saying, weapons wear out far too quickly. I imagine a mod will address this, if not I may just fire up cheatengine and do it myself. Of course I'd rather see slower degradation than weapons that never break, it's still a gameplay element that I like, just way unbalanced.

2) I really hate pressing 'x' to search, then pressing 'x' again to pick up the item. So you come up on a pile of luggage and you're just spamming 'x' to loot. Once to search the bag, once to pick up the item. I'd rather they just show what's in the bag when you approach and just have you press 'x' once to pick up. I imagine they did this to give zombies a chance at sneaking up on you while you are busy searching, but I've never really experienced that. Clear the area, search later. No surprises. The net effect is I'll come up on a pile of luggage and have to convince myself that it's worth it to painstakingly search through it.

So far I've only spent 2 skill points - the first survival point and the first blunt weapon point. I've got about 7 saved up. I need to read up on all the skills before I commit. Is fury easy to use and worth it? Also, I've noticed several locked crates. I kinda want to invest points so I'll be able to unlock them, but I'm worried that my crap luck will continue and the crates will only have flimsy oars for 29+1.

Didn't get it in time for the edit:

I did come up with another question. I picked Sam B as my character and already notice that sharp weapons are far more useful than blunt weapons. Seems like I picked the wrong character. Anyway, it looks like sharp and blunt weapons are plentiful but the only firearm I've seen was sold by a NPC and I have seen zero bullets in all my looting.

One character is a firearms specialist. Are their skills just completely useless? I guess I'm making an assumption that firearms and ammo are more plentiful later in the game, so someone picking the firearms specialist would shine then but struggle early on. Well I guess I can't say struggle, since I haven't used hardly any of my skill points and I can still hold my own. If you pick the firearms person does the game spawn ammo and weapons suited to your class, or do you just not use guns that much?

Firearms come late into the game. You don't even see your first one till you move to the next section in the town. Even then, you should be around lvl 20, and they are only pistols atm. They only deal around 200-250 dmg, but they are really only effective against other humans since you can get one shot kills if you aim at their head. Not so much on zombies which I think is a total crock since you only can hold 50+ whatever is in the gun.

If the game is stingy on how many bullets you can hold, at least give us the ability to do one shot kills on zombies! Damn... Even with my "good" pistol thats 296+110, it still takes 3-4 headshots to kill a common zombie. My one knife can do one hit critical kills.

But anyhow, I got so pissed off with my first character, I ended up deleting her (the black cop) and started a new one with Sam B. Since he's a knife specialist, it should have been my first choice. I'm loving the boomerang skill, although I just wish down the skill tree that you got the option to recover 100% of the time later in the game. I'd hate to play in coop with other people and some jack ass steals my knifes before I can recover them.

Oh and jb, if you go to the bunagloo's out on the water, there's some higher lvl zombies out there that had a lvl14 green machete when I was lvl4. Not sure if it a random luck, I'll have to lvl my toon up and try it again.

jbtilley, you are spot on with your two gripes about the game. Weapons wear out too quick and cost serious bank to continuously repair. Also, constantly having to search luggage and shit is time consuming and a chore.

With that said, I think they executed the melee fighting perfectly. It feels great knocking the shit out of a stumbling zombie with a baseball bat. Also, I think they did a great job of making the cooperative play seamless.

I have a feeling that the story line will get more interesting as you progress into the game.

at least you get to drive the armored car and mow down some undead for a short period of time. Although the driving controls are also a bit fickle, its fun running them over. although I think that your health is tied into the vehicle is stupid. I mean seriously? A zombie smashing on the hood of the truck will physically hurt toon? Why can't you just add a separate health bar for the vehicle like every other normal game out today?

^lol, done.

This is a great utility to customize Dead Island. It really helped improve the way the game looks. Just be careful to choose the selections for your card (ATI/NVIDIA). I have been playing a lot of multiplayer, and it's pretty fun.

L4D was much more arcadish style, but yes I agree, L4D was way more polished and firearms seem like an afterthought in this game than most other zombie games. Did Dead Rising 2 had any firearms or was that pure melee?

One random thought. There are several recordings hidden all over and it's kinda funny the direction they took. Each of the recordings features the same guy and each follow a similar format:

Look at that innocent person.
Oh no. That innocent person is attacking me. WHY WOULD THEY DO THIS?
Sob sob sob. I had to kill them, it was them or me.

What gets me is how the guy is completely surprised every time this happens. You'd think that by the 6th or 7th recording the guy would be adjusted to the fact that people are attacking him but nope, surprised every time. Also, apparently this is the only person on earth that has no frame of reference for zombies. Half the recordings go on and on and on describing what the attackers are like when he could have just said "they are acting like zombies" and been done with it. Just something I found kinda funny as I was playing.

^Yeah firearms do seem like an afterthought, but I'm glad they included them. I don't think they included them to be legitimate weapons, I think the train of thought was they needed something fresh to bring to the table after several chapters worth of nothing but melee. Those parts of act 2 and act 3 that included human enemies with guns helped break up the monotony.

Also glad the enemies are starting to drop more cash (lvl 30 now). It seems like the weapon repair is really steep now, so that $592 the zombie has in its pocket really only goes toward the $592 in damage I did to my fully upgraded, modded katana to kill that one zombie. Like each swing with that thing costs a hundred bucks.

The city of Moresby parts of the game are extra hard just due to the insane amount of zombies. I don't get how zombies that lived in those slums have so much money on their person after they die. Also, how do the zombies at the resort level up, are they going on quests as well? Wouldn't it make more sense if the zombies leveled as the story progressed, but when you went back to the resort, say to take some dumb bitch champagne so you can get diamonds, then the zombies are still a low level?

Back to the city of Moresby, I like that it is a bit more difficult due to the sheer number of zombies, but I mean damn weapon repairs are killing me. Why is money even a thing in the zombie apocalypse, shouldn't we be trading food and water? Better yet, how about all the useless shit we find is used to repair weapons. I have 25 pieces of wire...

I just got into Moresby and so far, I'm having a blast with this game.

The money business...meh. I can sort of see it for buying items from people, since it basically just gives you the barter value of various items. Could be done better, but given the relatively minor role of trading with people (at least as I've seen so far), I'll let it slide.

Agree that having to spend money on upgrades/repairs makes no sense. They want to give a sense of scarcity and the need to maintain your weapons -- that makes sense. No problems there. But why the needed items wouldn't be spare parts or something...no clue.

***** Cheat Spoiler ******
Don't look if you have integrity

You can clone any weapon by holding the left analog button,
pressing the Y button and then about 250ms later hitting the
right analog button.

Basically, you are dropping the weapon and throwing it a roughly
the same time which results in two weapons.

This at least helps me deal with the stupid rate at which weapons wear out.

lol... its no secret. Not exactly a well kept bug in the game. Did that about 3 hours into the game and had a hand of all 7 orange unique items. Also, you can clone items by throwing items and die, so the game restarts with more weapons on the ground.

So this game is essentially no-good? Or, "not worth it", if you will.

For all its flaws, it still very enjoyable. However that being said, this game is not a $50 polished game that you spend time reading reviews or getting excited to preorder. Its more like a B rated $10-20 game with sharp corners that you buy from a bargain bin because you saw the cover art was an undead Blondie babe with a bikini and blood all over her mouth.

Yeah, at first I was having some fun with this game. I beat it and started with a new character but got to the point where it just wore on me - probably 4 quests into the second playthrough and I think I'm done.

Borrowed this from a friend and finished my first play through as Sam B. I had a lot of fun despite some of the issues. Wonky infected spawn points and spawn rates were probably my biggest gripe. In the city having new infected spawn just as I've finished killing the first group got pretty frustrating.

and for whoever asking about the gun specialist. Her Rage ability has unlimited ammo and she gets some other good melee skills. So she isn't useless in the early game. Also there are a couple pistols to be obtained on the beach, but ammo is scarce.

I may play through again at some point with a different character, but it's Skyrim time so it'll have to wait.

I just picked this up the other day. it is an addicting game. I haven't made it to an escort mission. Sounds like fun...
