Quote :
"Actor Eddie Murphy has withdrawn as host of the Oscars, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Wednesday, following producer Brett Ratner's resignation over an anti-gay slur.

The news of Murphy's departure came Wednesday, a day after Ratner quit as producer of the Feb. 26 show.

"I completely understand and support each party's decision with regard to a change of producers for this year's Academy Awards ceremony," Murphy said in a news release from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. "I was truly looking forward to being a part of the show that our production team and writers were just starting to develop, but I'm sure that the new production team and host will do an equally great job."

Murphy was considered an unconventional choice for Oscar host, hand-picked by Ratner to shake up the staid awards ceremony and draw in new - and younger - viewers.

AMPAS President Tom Sherak said in a statement that the 42-year-old Ratner "did the right thing for the Academy and for himself."

"Brett is a good person, but his comments were unacceptable,'' Sherak said.

Ratner used a pejorative term for gay men during a question-and-answer session at a screening for "Tower Heist." He also discussed his sexual exploits on a recent episode of "The Howard Stern Show," leading to speculation that it wasn't just the slur, for which Ratner apologized, that had Oscar organizers worrying.

In a written resignation statement released Tuesday, Ratner said he's "taking real action over the coming weeks and months in an effort to do everything I can both professionally and personally to help stamp out the kind of thoughtless bigotry I've so foolishly perpetrated."

The director, whose credits also include the "Rush Hour" films, said that being asked to produce the Oscar show "was the proudest moment of my career," but he didn't want to distract from the academy "and the high ideals it represents.""

Just want to say that Brett Ratner SUUUUUUUUCKS.

Also, I have no idea what will win best picture this year because it has been a pretty terrible year for movies. Maybe The Descendants by default since it's Clooney and Alexander Payne?

Tree of Life should definitely get a Best Picture nomination. Attack the Block deserves a slew of technical awards but almost certainly won't get them.

^Considering the fact that there are 10 nominations to dole out now instead of 5, Tree of Life will almost certainly get nominated. Hard to imagine the Academy giving the win to such an innately artsy film, but I'd be ecstatic if, for whatever reason, they did; it has easily been my favorite movie of the year thus far.

That's actually a good point. It wouldn't have anything to do with the actual movie, but I can see the Academy rewarding that duo in such a down year for film. I didn't hate J. Edgar, but I definitely didn't love it and thought that there were some major issues in terms of both direction (any amateur could've edited this movie down to a cool hour and a half and retained all the film's dramatic "importance"; I expected better from Eastwood, whom I actually really like as a director), acting (I liked Armie Hammer in Social Network and really wanted to like him in this, but he was absolutely atrocious as an old man), and script (Hoover's first words of the film are something like "NOW IT'S TIME TO TELL MY SIDE OF THE STORY" or something like that IIRC). So, yeah, overall a pretty poorly executed film. Somehow it isn't completely terrible, though.

I would think that both Midnight in Paris and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close would get best picture nods as well. Also Elizabeth Olsen is this year's Jennifer Lawrence so I'd expect her to get a nod for Martha Marcy May Marlene.

"Lots of "(Blank) got robbed" this year
Where should we start? Albert Brooks in supporting (shame on you Academy for giving "Drive" just a sound nod), Michael Fassbender in leading actor, Tilda Swinton in leading actress, Thomas McCarthy ("Win Win") and Will Reiser ("50/50") in original screenplay, "Project Nim" in documentary (that deserves a "wow" too), Shailene Woodley in supporting actress and "Tinker Tailor" for art direction are just some of the omissions we can't wrap our heads around this morning. On the other hand…"

I agree with all of this except I thought Project Nim was lame.

Unbelievable that Extremely Loud and War Horse get best picture noms. Spielberg has the academy in his pocket.

I guess I hope the Artist wins a lot.

Disappointed at the lack of The Skin I Live In.

Disappointed at the lack of Ryan Gosling but not surprised, his 3 performances all took votes away from each other.

A JONAH HILL BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR WOULD BE AMAZING but Plummer's going to win.

I'm not saying he didn't do a good job...but he played about as un-complex a character as you could get. I don't think you can say a job was "great" unless it was slightly difficult.

I saw Moneyball last night, good stuff.

Jonah Hill was OK but most of his performance just seemed like blankly staring at things.

Brad Pitt was good. Better than Descendants Clooney

As much as I'm trying to avoid the, "Oh yeah, if it's so easy, let's see you do it" argument, playing someone completely pedestrian can be very difficult.

For instance, I'd challenge most people to convincingly act like themselves while working from a script.

Most people aren't actors.

He was given a simple role and he nailed it. Move on. What's wrong? Jack Black beat you out for the pretentious music store clerk in "High Fidelity"?

^ Wrong. I know it's the hippest latest thing these past few years to call The Godfather overrated, but it's simply not the case. No idea where it started...maybe that Family Guy episode where they're in the safe room?

...but I do agree III was okay.
