this is my first time playing gears since my freshman year (5 years ago) and I am starting to remember why I stopped playing in the first place. with that being said, I am enjoying the game as of now. It is a fresh change from the stupid amounts of Reach I have been playing lately. Only played 3 chapters in campaign and spent the rest of the night playing multiplayer. We'll see how much longer I can make it playing this game before I go crazy again.

I own all the Gears games and Halo games. I kept buying Halo games because I wanted them to get better with each release but realistically, it was a little more of the same thing OVER AND OVER.

Halo falls short in so many areas for me. For one, the Marine weapons absolutely suck. I cannot stand how the assault rifle and machine guns sound. They sound like firecrackers going off inside of an aluminum can. It's absolutely comical compared to the weapon sounds in Gears. There is no comparison, IMO.

I do think the story in Halo is better. However, they have had 5 games to get the story right as opposed to three but overall, I think it's better written than Gears.

My biggest complaint is that Halo just hasn't really changed enough to keep me interested. The gameplay doesn't really feel any different between ODST and Reach. Combine that with subpar sound effects, shitty weapons, and I just think Gears is a better experience in this last release than Reach is.

Take Horde for example. Horde in Gears 2 was nothing to write home about. You fight waves of enemies with people online, nothing special really. Now, Horde in G3 is fucking AWESOME. Now you build defense structures around your base like spike fences, barbed wire, turrets, sentries, decoys, and traps. You have currency assigned to specific kills and enemies that require to you be strategic in each round. The enemy AI, especially on the higher difficulties is fucking UNREAL. I got to wave 30 last night and beating that round was seriously one of the hardest/fun things I've ever done in multiplayer. Fighting a Brumac + 15 other enemies in a confined map is fucking insane.

Reach's version of this is no where near as challenging or as fun. It's things like that make me play COD3 and G3 over the Halo franchise. Halo just seems like a spastic free for all DM where as COD and Gears give you something different from the average shooter and a hell of a lot more challenging.

let me paint this picture for you at Level 30 and keep in mind that each time you start levels 10, 20, 30, etc, these are considered BOSS WAVES.

We were playing this online (myself and 3 other random people) and here is the list that I can remember off the top of my head.


1 Brumak
4 of those flying squid type things with riders on their backs
8 – mix of boomers, grinders, the ones that carry the shield and mace, and diggers
2 of those ground rider things
4 grunts (2 of which were lambent)
1 Berserker
2 shreikers
2-4 tickers
And 2 things that I’ve honestly not seen in the game before (I haven't beaten it yet). All I can say is they are armored everywhere but their face and are HARD AS FUCK TO KILL. Nothing hurts them but shooting them in the face (WHICH TAKES FOREVER), HEAVY WEAPONS and grenades.

There actually might have been more but I lost count at this point. Either way, that is a fairly accurate count.

This scenario took a while to beat simply because SO MUCH SHIT IS GOING ON.
There are so many missiles exploding from the Brumak that describing it without seeing it is just an injustice, grinders throwing chain fire at you, my two teammates on turrets, the sentry gun going ape shit at a shield carrying butcher or whatever it is, the shreikers resurrecting dead grunts by SCREAMING ALL THE TIME, boomer fire, digger fire which makes this underground tunneling sound right before the bomb pops up from the ground and explodes in your face, tickers ticking and exploding, and you get the idea. Basically complete and utter MAYHEM. My new stereo speakers got a fucking workout, I can tell you that much. It was one of the most fun experiences I've ever had in a video game and we must have tried at least 10 times to beat that wave. If it can be that much fun while you are getting your ass kicked, that's a pretty good indicator that the game is fucking awesome.

Thought I'd throw my two cents in:

Single-Player is more of the same: narrow-corridors, firefights, vehicle sections etc. punctuated by awesome manly dialogue and a decent storyline.

Multi-player is awesome. All around awesome. Horde mode? AWESOME. Beast Mode? Awesome. Standard player v player MP? Awesome.

The game is one of the most fun and engrossing multiplayer games I've played in a while, which says a lot for how simplified it is.

2) Why is a human (queen) leading them?
