I saw a "reenactment" on sportscenter, since they couldn't show a clip. they made it sound as if it was legal, but still a cheap-shot.

Quote :
"Mayweather, 34, dominated his 24-year-old opponent for three rounds. In the fourth, Ortiz intentionally head-butted Mayweather, causing the ref to temporarily halt the bout and deduct a point from Ortiz, who actually kissed Mayweather on the cheek as part of his apology.

The fighters were moved to the center of the ring and touched gloves. Time was called “in,” but Ortiz still seemed to be looking toward the ref for a signal to resume. Mayweather pounced, tagging Ortiz with a left and then flooring him with a right.

End of fight. The consensus seemed to be that Mayweather’s punches were legal cheap shots. You gotta protect yourself in the ring at all times.

Post-fight, Mayweather grew weary of veteran TV analyst Larry Merchant’s grilling and yelled at Merchant, “You don’t know s--- about boxing,” prompting the 80-year-old Merchant to reply, “I wish I was 50 years younger, I’d kick your ass.”

"

Im not big on the whole "OMG THIS IS A CHEAP SHOT" if its within the rules, but im big on "protect yourself at all times" I dont even see this as a low move on mayweathers part. the ref says fight you fight, its not like touching gloves and before your fists separate winging a vicious right hand at them. Ref said go, victor is waiting on god knows what, go land on him.

The article makes it sound lke the ref signalled the action to continue, given that he is the only one that controls the fight clock, and victor missed it?

Anyway, kissing mayweather, i see where he was going with it, mind games might have changed the complex of the fight, but unfortunately he wasnt ready for the bout to continue.

this is my synposis based on reading the article, i didnt see the fight

and LOL at the exchange between may and larry merchant, i hope SOMEBODY kicks mayweathers ass, i think its great that larry said some shit to that disrespectful jackass

may's never going to fight pac because may's a pussy

this fight is just exhibit #45621349857 proving his man-clam status

but ortiz was also a pussy with that head-butt bullshit that led to the hugout

I did see the fight and the old man didn't say that to mayweather. After the interview he said that if he was 50 years younger he'd try but probably lose.

Ortiz was a tool for throwing the headbutt. That got mayweather Pissed off, and he saw his chance and took it. In the post fight interview ortiz knew he should have been protecting himself. Good fight up till then though.

Yeah. He said that even though he might lose, he'd still fight mayweather.

wrong.

he absolutely said it. He put his hand on may's shoulder looked him in the eye and said "if I were 50 years younger i'd kick your ass!"

later when talking to the other announcer, he kinda laughed and said "50 I don't think I could kick his ass but I def would have tried"

^This. They both started to buck up towards each other too, that was hilarious.

It was not very clear the ref signaled "time in" like that article says. Mayweather knew what he was doing when he threw that first (and second) shot. Ortiz was over the top with his attempts to apologize (after his blatantly delibrate headbutt), but that was still the cheapest shot I've seen on that stage.

it's a shame that Mayweather is going to keep dodging real opponents his entire life so that he can do shit like this.

i seriously doubt mayweather would risk a DQ on his record throwing a shot outside the rules in a fight he was winning handily

it says a lot when the only knockout he's had in forever came from hitting an opponent twice with his gloves down. In a few months they'll be spinning this into how Mayweather has knockout force behind his punches, despite the fact that every semi-decent boxer he encounters is still standing at the end of the fight.

its not his game to go for power

i dont think you can use that to discredit him as a boxer despite how much you dislike him

whether you get knocked out cold or get outpointed you still feel pretty much the same back in the locker room sitting on the bench, especially when you land as clean as floyd.

They didn't knock him out, either.

His greatest attribute is dodging, countering, deflecting punches. Nobody can get a clean punch in on him. Hell, Ortiz had him on the ropes and still couldn't get a shot in on him to the point where he got frustrated enough to lunge in and and headbutt money may.

Pacquiao will split his head wide open, and Mayweather knows it. Hell, we waited until De La Hoya was past his prime and until Shane Mosely was washed up before agreeing to fight them.

For anyone who hasn't seen the clip yet, that video shows the last round and post-fight interview.

Larry Merchant is one of the worst announcers in the history of sports, I'm with Mayweather, I have no idea how he still has a job at HBO.

no, i hate on GSP because he cant finish a fuckin submission

besides, he has every tool to finish his last string of opponents but since the fitch fight he has not put the pedal to the metal.

the fitch fight was a decision, but GSP was fucking FIGHTING that time. Thats all i ask
against overmatched lowly-wellrounded opponents

mayweather is in there using everything boxing has to offer, i dont think GSP and mayweather are comparable...both are technical but GSP should be at the very least giving fighters a reason to look for a way out of the fight, in boxing there are less ways to get the finish, the individual hits arent as devastating, and blocks and partial blocks are more likely

with the size of the gloves in mma AND gsp's clear striking accuracy and conditioning coupled with the mere threat of takedown attempts, he should be landing some serious blows and ending fights with them, disorienting them to the point of being able to capitalize with ground position and finishing the fight soon after, there no reason why he shouldnt.

so dont even go there with me. it looks bad when condit and ellenberger finish your opponents in less than a minute not because they are better fighters, but because they pull the fucking trigger after they create the opportunity

fuck if GSP wants to coast, then coast man, but dont apologize after every fight and act like youre gonna try hard to finish next time. Rashad isnt a finisher but hes a fighter i will watch every single time because hes not fighting opponents he clearly outclasses. and when he does outclass them, guess what he does....he fucking mauls them until the ref pulls him off.

watch GSP fight condit, who is fuckin dangerous, i promise you he will not pull the trigger, he will not even try.

That's Mayweather.

Besides, this is your own words. I'm applying it to GSP.

Unless you're going to try and tell me Josh Koscheck with a broken orbital bone isn't GSP taking it to his opponents.

after listening to today's BS report, i'm officially on board w/ boxing. how does one become a boxing fan?

i've long believed that boxing is the purest sport around, but now i'm officially on board.

[Edited on September 20, 2011 at 7:22 PM. Reason : mma is still a fucking joke though. barely above bumfight home videos.]

yeah! that's the thing. i might even do it to support the sport, b/c i hate to see tradition die (unless it helps the ACC), but i'd rather not. maybe i'll have to find the closest buffalo wild wings.

id say watc friday night fights and just find guys you like and tune in when they are fighting

youll start recognizing guys as they move up whether its the guy you are following or not

^^^^i wont tell you that unless you tell me that after that 1st round where he broke Kos orbital kos became so dangerous that gsp proceeeded to do the exact same thing he had done in round one in fear of his own saftey despite not only kos' vastly inferior and telegraphed striking, despite his diminished vision and depth perception, but ttat kos couldnt get within 3 feet without being hit, much less getting in close enough to take a decent shot on the Champ.

I dont thin GSP strung any combinations together, he literally kept throwing a jab. Any skilled striiker would have noticed what Kos was doing wrong and had his reactions guaged and prepared an offense to capitalize, well, any skilled striker that gave a shit about finishing fights If he had followed up with some rights he might have got the KO like Paulo Thiago did.

but, you know, for some reason chose to fear koscheck. Dont get me wrong Kos is dangerous cuz he had nothing to lose, but those overhands looked like they were moving through water, not even luis cane would have gotten hit with them.

I really think you are a little biased since you actually participate in MMA, and you know what it feels like to be in the ring and knock someone out or make them tap.

For GSP, I really think he is just a very intelligent fighter. I think it all comes down to, he KNOWS with probably 99% certainty that he can win the fights against these guys via the decision. On the same token, he probably feels like he has a slightly lower chance of winning via submission or knockout, and that if he pursues these avenues of winning, he leaves himself open for his opponent to land a miracle punch/kick/etc.

IMO, you go into a fight trying to win by a certain method for one of two reasons. Let's take KO's as a "for instance". If you go into a fight saying you are going to win by KO, it's for one of two reasons - either you are a knock-out fighter, and you feel that a KO is your most viable means of winning, OR you are clearly outmatched and you know that your only chance is to land that miracle punch (a third possibility is that the guy you are fighting is a total bitch, but let's assume at least decent competition). I think GSP just goes into every fight KNOWING that he is the better athlete/fighter, and he uses that to his advantage. He doesn't need the KO or submission, because he knows he will win without them, so why in the world would he risk possibly being knocked out or submitted when he will easily win the decision? I think he learned that lesson in his first fight against Matt Hughes - one where he was clearly winning but got too aggressive and ended up getting caught in an armbar.

I think his strategy is totally different than yours, and that is subconsciously one reason you really dislike the dude.

Rude Jude is always telling the truth, best personality on satellite radio! Calling Mayweather "butthurt" on national radio: priceless.

Jude had a facebook status update yesterday with something along the lines of "if i had a dollar for every Mayweather dickrider that's sent me hate messages on twitter, I'd have like twelve dollars"
