Let's discuss whether this new statistic is an improvement on rating quarterbacks.
I got curious as to how Cam Newton was stacking up with the best under ESPN's new rating system and after checking was surprised to see him ranked only 16th overall.
Week 1: 75.7 (6th) Week 2: 25.2 (29th)
But Cam played a pretty good ballgame yesterday. Certainly not great, but better than 29th. It would be hard to convince me that 400 yards with a couple TD's on that defense isn't a good day individually.
Total QBR says only Cutler, Collins, and McCown had worse days.

50 is supposed to be average
I know he threw 3 picks and we lost the game, but 432 yards and a couple scores seems "above average" to me] 9/19/2011 4:14:35 PM |

You have to wait for a full season to view it objectively
Game to game ratings are going to fluctuate wildly, no matter the formula

ESPN loves their new rating but it's clearly a joke.

If you can tell me how Cam had a worse day than Cassel (who if wasn't listed as worse, must have been listed as better) - then I'm listening. Otherwise - I'd say the statistic is bogus. 9/19/2011 4:35:33 PM |

He also scored 2 touchdowns.
Matt Cassel's team scored 3 points total, plus he threw 3 interceptions and only 133 yards.
Yeah...

But after seeing that stat, can you reasonably say that total QBR isn't a joke?
No.... 9/19/2011 6:01:27 PM |

It looks suspect now, but they don't pay me to make football formulas, so who knows. 9/19/2011 6:16:00 PM |

^^^ They have decent sample sizes, not from this season but from previous seasons.
Quote : | "“The goal behind any player rating should be determining how much a player contributes to a win,” wrote QBR’s Dr. Frankenstein, ESPN Director of Analytics Dean Oliver. QBR “is a statistical measure that incorporates the contexts and details of [a quarterback’s] throws and what they mean for wins,” Oliver added. Really? Well, in 2008 Orlovsky QBRed the Lions to 10 losses in 10 games as Detroit became the first team in history to finish 0-16. Thigpen was only a little better, QBRing the Chiefs to only one win in the 14 games in which he participated. Roethlisberger QBRed Pittsburgh to 12 regular-season wins, two more wins over San Diego and Baltimore in the AFC playoffs, and concluded the season with a majestic two-minute, 78-yard, fourth-quarter scoring drive capped by a perfect TD toss to secure a Super Bowl win over the Cardinals. Cold, Hard Football Facts named that effort the third-best drive in Super Bowl history. But according to ESPN’s QBR, in 2008, both Orlovsky (51.1 QBR) and Thigpen (50.8 QBR) contributed more to winning NFL games than Super Bowl hero Roethlisberger (46.4 QBR)." |
