Does anyone encode mkv to mp4/avi? I typically find HD movies (720 or 1080) in mkv format, and I'm currently using a program called Handbrake, but so far I haven't been all that impressed with the output. I'm sure its how I'm setting up the encode, but I was just wondering if anyone out there used any other kind of software. 9/20/2011 11:08:25 PM |

Yes, it usually combines video files (like avi and mp4) with seperate audio files ad subtitles into one file. Output of the mkv file is still dependent of the source recording and actual encoding used.9/21/2011 12:19:36 PM |

mkv2vob takes like 2 seconds. and the results play in whatever you need, especially the ps3. 9/21/2011 4:07:31 PM |

Yea, the key here is getting it to play on the ps3. What I'm really looking for is just a way to get all the movies on my media server to play on the ps3. I also checked out the other thread for media streaming - thinking about maybe getting a boxee.
I have a coworker who has a Dune HD media streamer, which is pretty badass, but it is also $250. 9/21/2011 5:50:09 PM |

You can find dedicated streaming devices that will play 1080p MKV/h.264 files for under $100. 9/21/2011 6:00:05 PM |

pretty much mkv2vob or eac3to (less user friendly, more features).
