The MRSA infection must have probed to bone then. Osteomyelitis is very tough to treat. I hope they tried to do some wound care and give him IV Vancomycin before deciding to amputate. Either way it's something that has to be treated right away or else you could lose your leg or even worse get septicemia and die. I unfortunately have seen way too many patients in my short medical career that have had amputations due to osteomyelitis.

^They did at my local hospital. My dad's friend lost his leg sitting in a hospital bed for two weeks with no treatment for the infection. When he got to Moore Regional they were blown away that a hospital would let it happen. I'll crawl to another hospital than go to my local.

I've seen some pretty bad infections that needed immediate surgery. On my rotation at the VA hospital here in Philly last month this one guy came in that morning, and by that afternoon he was getting an immediate I&D with a partial amputation of his 1st ray. His wound didn't even look that bad on the outside either. It could have been way worse if he hadn't came in when he did. Thankfully we were able to save most of his foot.
