Starring Elizabeth Olsen and featuring John Hawkes, Hugh Dancy and Sarah Paulson among others. This film has been getting a ton of great buzz as it opens across the country in limited release. The Rialto is getting it Friday, you'll have to check local listings for other theaters. Here's a trailer if you haven't already seen it:

I heard some awesome things about this, and the trailer looks good. I'll definitely be seeing it at the Rialto.

Saw this last night. I thought it was good, but not great. Olsen and Hawkes are both fantastic and some of the direction is very well done, especially some of the cuts and fades. However, I felt like they didn't quite know how to handle this interesting story they had on their hands; I felt like there needed to be just a little bit more to the characters. I thought they could've and should've given more screen time to Hawkes' character, Patrick. Every time he was in a scene, the movie got instantly better.

That said, for a directorial debut, it was a pretty damn impressive film. I'll be looking forward to Sean Durkin's work in the future.

^that's sounds exactly like my reaction to Winter's Bone. I'm probably gonna check this out on Friday. Have you seen Bellflower yet? I've heard good and bad things about it but I'm pretty curious what with all the flamethrowers and insane custom car stuff.

I thought Hawkes got plenty of screentime, and his dialogue was even a tad hokey at times.

Also both of the films I saw at Galaxy yesterday (This and Take Shelter) had really really bad projection, I hadn't noticed this before.

^You didn't feel like his character could've been developed a little further, though?

Plus, most of the time his character was in a scene, you either couldn't see his face or it was distorted by shadows (a very clear choice by the cinematographer/director). I don't really have a problem with that choice, I just think Hawkes is a fucking awesome actor and this character had a lot of potential since it was right in Hawkes' wheelhouse.

I don't know, I just know I somehow left the movie feeling like he (both the actor Hawkes and his character Patrick) was a tad underutilized. It's all about Martha, which is fine. Just could've been a little better I think.

I mean the movie was from her point of view basically, so I thought he got a correct amount of screentime. He had plenty of focus, he got an entire song! they couldn't keep packing in flashbacks. Also I just thought he was a bit of a cult-leader charicature at times.

Also I rented Bellflower tonight and liked it a lot.

It's pretty incredibly arty, more so than MMMM, but it's pretty rad.
