So in the next couple of weeks, a friend and I are going to need to ship our cars down to Texas.

Anyone have any recommendations/past experiences with companies that do this sort of thing?

I know amtrak has a service that lets you send your car down 95, maybe see if there are any similar services to go west?

Nah, moving briefly.

We've currently got an add up on uship.com which is apparently the place to go for this sort of thing. I'll report back on how the entire process goes.

don't check craigslist. OFFERS TO SHIP CARS ARE 100% FRAUDULENT!

The system for this is a pain in the ass. When you make a deal with a "company" to ship the car, what has happened in 99% of cases is that you have really had a broker accept your bid on the grounds that he thinks that he can then go find a shipping company to take the job, while turning a profit for himself.

It's tough to deal directly with a shipper, and most of the lower-priced "offers" to ship your car will never actually get a shipping company to agree (at least for a profit margin than the broker will accept). It's just a bait and switch--the broker will come back and say "Sorry, we can't get it shipped for this...maybe it would help if you upped your bid by $___.")

^^ This is pretty much verbatim what Shrike told me about his experience in getting his car shipped to Salt Lake City.

Quote :
"just keep in mind how much of a scam the whole car shipping business is
they will try to extort every dime out of you
they'll tell you one day/time/price
and then call back a few days later saying they cant do it and will have to raise the price
and it'll take longer
they are like drug dealers
but more dishonest"

I appreciate all the offers for drivers, but we're looking to fill the cars up as much as possible and not put the mileage on the cars if possible, so having them driven isn't exactly what we're looking for.

Nothing wrong with uship for freight, I ship engines via engineshipping.com, but I typically get personal references for vehicle shipment companies from the community when I get those questions. NOT the wolfweb- try a g wagon forum or something high end along those lines. Or d-90.com

When I've shipped cars, they've always been pretty strict about what can be in the vehicle. Typically nothing other than stock vehicle parts and permanently installed after market items. Other items (jumper cables, rope, bungees, tire pressure gauges, trip diary, etc.) have to fit into a fairly small box.
