I've got a lot of home projects coming up and would like to save as much money on material costs as possible. I'm building a deck the week after Christmas, then laying laminate flooring in mid-January. Also building a privacy fence in the back. I got the deck materials quoted by Lowes but was thinking I could get a better deal at some place like the Contractors Yard. I was wondering if anyone here has already shopped around when you did your home project and what you found concerning pricing. Any advice would be appreciated.

There's that lumber yard that's between Beryl Rd and Hillsborough St. I know my parents have gone there a few times and gotten pretty good discounts on wood there, with a little haggling...

You might want to check out the habitat ReStore, too. It isn't new wood but they have some reclaimed stuff in good shape.

I'd be surprised if anyone would be able to beat Lowe's/Home Depot's prices for basic pressure treated lumber.

Now if you want to get fancy with PVC/Composite decking or hardwood, then Capital City

I would shop it will 3 places. Pro Build, Stock, and Lowes. Either Pro Build or Stock will beat Lowes if you show them the quote. Lowes is good for plywood, osb, and basic treated. When you get to the 16,18,20,22 foot length the lumber yards become much cheaper. keep in mind Pro Build pays their employees on gross sales and Stock/84 pay on gross margin. You will usually get a better price when the sales guy is NOT paid on margin. I use my normal sales guys from the lumber yards on my home projects for the original bulk order and then usually Home Depot on the fill in's on home jobs.

Also HD and Lowes do not carry #1 treated. So if you decking boards are desired with no knots you will need go to a lumber yard.

I am consistently disappointed with the prices of the ReStores in this area. Maybe it's different for lumber but I find for other building supplies they have, they're either priced the same as new or no better than 20-30% off new prices. I don't really get it because I've been to ones in other parts of the country that have outstanding prices on the same things.
