i have a custom, older-ish computer i inherited (didn't build it myself) that simply will not boot with the CLR_CMOS jumper in place (whether to clear OR in the default position)...it boots fine without the jumper, but if it's unplugged from the wall, BIOS is cleared of settings and it won't continue until you go in and save/exit

first thing i checked was the battery...replaced it with a new one and the same problem

second, i tried different memory and then checked each slot...same problem

third, updated the BIOS (which needed to be done anyway), thinking that a bad flash or corrupt BIOS could be the culprit...same problem

it doesn't have this problem as long as it remains plugged in, so it's not a HUGE deal...but i'm thinking it may be the power supply? could that do it? i don't have a spare to check with, unfortunately

Is the battery in the right direction? Are the terminals corroded or anything?

I've had problems in the past with a computer where the BIOS battery didn't make a good connection, it was loose in the socket. The result was a good battery but a reset BIOS every time the power went out.

I think people electric tape a penny over the battery in those situations.
