^^that'd be pretty huge if Johnson is held-out of Wednesday's game. since we have so much trouble with our bigs fouling out and nobody to fill in for them.

Miami lives off points inside the arc. I doubt they get those against us.
They don't shoot threes at all. That's our main weakness defensively.
Defensively they are horrid.
They are hopelessly short and have zero depth.
I like NC State vs the spread. This has all the makings of a 30+ point game that might only be a 15 point spread. 2/27/2012 3:16:53 PM |

Whether Johnson plays or not is obviously huge. Not only did he score on us pretty easily last time but as someone mentioned he tends to draw a lot of fouls.
I doubt we can count on Miami to start the game 1-23 or whatever from 3's this game.
Miami has a good team with a lot of size. We are in meltdown mode right now so this will be a tough game for sure. I'd say Miami opens as 1 point favorites if Johnson plays, if not we will be ~2-3 point faves.
This definitely feels like a loss, so I think somehow we come out and pull off the win instead even though we've really sucked at home this year.
Now that we don't have NCAA tournament pressure hanging over our heads I think we will play better.

^ yeah, that's exactly what will happen.
Then we win our first ACCT game and go into a big game thinking we have a shot at NCAA and we get slaughtered by 20+ points.
That will happen. 2/27/2012 4:32:46 PM |

You have to be too hopeful to think that we are NCAA bound at this point. Because anytime you are relying on the "win out" path then you are prolly already out. 2/27/2012 4:36:35 PM |

i'm merely saying that we will have recent success and think we have a chance against one of the top 3 or 4 acc tournament seeds, only to get our hopes crushed. that is how ncsu works. 2/27/2012 4:39:23 PM |

We'd have to get to the ACCT finals to make the NCAAs.
That would mean that we'd likely have beated UNC or Duke on Saturday, and our resume sucks without a win over either of them. 2/27/2012 5:57:19 PM |

Without Johnson, Miami shoots 40 threes and makes 17 of them. State loses it's 5th straight as it works on it's Amato like season ending collapse. Wood is completely invisible again and Brown turns it over 8 times.

I'm about to crank up the Sunshine Sidney Squad Glorified Gottfried Gang here with some motherfucking optimism blowing out your asshole.
Some people say they only want to face a team when its at their best. They don't want to face a team who is crippled by injuries or NCAA ineligibilites. We're not playing at a high enough level to afford that luxury, so I hope Reggie Johnson remains ineligible until Thursday. He is fun to watch, but we need any advantage we can get. We all know what happened in the 2-episode series finale of Blue Mountain State.
So let's say Gottfried tells the team the Gauntlet is over, that the Clemson loss was just jetlag from the USAir Rape Gauntlet turbulence, and convinces them to just go have some fun and play basketball. Wood gets a little confidence and knocks down a couple jumpers early. AJ remembers why he transferred to State instead of getting a part-time job while he finished grad school and continues to knock down some shots. CJ Williams realizes that his collegiate career could be ending soon and goes back to his level of play a month ago. Let's say we win and go to 8-7, controlling our own destiny against a now 8-7 Miami team over whom we hold the tiebreaker.
Fast forward to Thursday night. FSU at Virginia. FSU is on the road and UNC has probably beaten Maryland and Duke has most likely beaten Wake, even though they throttled BC on Saturday. FSU is mathematically eliminated from a top-2 seed in the ACC tournament, but they still want to get the best possible NCAA tournament seeding. In a battle of great defense and inconsistent offense versus an intentionally half-court paced team who would rather get back on defense than even try for an offensive rebound, FSU wins the game. Even if its as ugly as their two games this season against the Cavaliers' in-state rival Hokies, FSU has their eye on March.
We are 8-7 with 3rd place impossible to attain, but in a 3-way tie for 4th place and a 1st round bye. If we beat Virginia Tech, we finish ahead of Miami regardless of what they do. We don't control our own fate completely though, as Virginia could beat Maryland and would hold the tiebreaker over the Wolfpack with identical 9-7 conference records. But we all know how well Maryland does to crush the post-season dreams of ACC foes. That alone could give our team the motivation for a late-NFL-playoff push style effort where you can only win your own game but you can hope for a little help, and a little help is just one game.
We get that help, we don't play until Friday. We don't get that help, we play Wake, BC, or GT, who we are a combined 5-1 against this season, on Thursday. It might be a longshot, but so was a Brooklyn kid coaching against a couple of the NBA's 50 All Time Greatest players and winning. We beat Michael Jordan and Ralph Sampson. We beat Clyde Drexler and Akeem Olajuwon. Why can't we beat Austin Rivers and John Henson?
