Looking to buy an HD video camera for a wedding, don't want to spend more than 400 dollars, was thinking the sony handycam

If this is your wedding and you value your memories, i'd recommend hiring a videographer that knows his way around a DSLR, and let them handle the production (maybe holler at greeches for some advice on who could do it in the area). When it was time for me to get married, I was gonna give my cameras to a couple of relatives and let them shoot my wedding. I did that, but I also ran into a talented local kid that agreed to make a quality video for me at a reasonable rate. I am sooo glad i did not rely entirely on the footage shot by my relatives. I got a ton of "handycam" type of footage from my cameras that captured most of the wedding in great detail, and in HD, but without great skill. I may have watched it a couple of times, but it is the "pro" video that we have been watching over and over again and showing to all the folks that could not make it to the wedding. Honestly it was a lot better investment than the wedding photographs. I know the pro video packages can sometimes set you back a few grand around here, but you may be able to find someone just starting out that can put together a "highlight" type 5-20 min movie that will really capture the spirit of the celebration in a cinematic way for a couple hundred bucks more than the camera will set you back. Also you won't have to deal with the editing instead of enjoying your honeymoon.

Baz shoots on a Canon 5D Mk II
I shoot on a Canon T3i

we both use shoulder mounts for our handheld shooting w/ attached LED light panels
our sound rig is a Zoom H4 with a Rode NTG-1 shotgun mic (although we have other mics and options)

we also have stationary lighting to conduct interviews with friends and family


I received a Master of Arts in Media Studies in NYC in 2010
JBaz has a degree in photography and worked as a commercial photographer in Miami and LA

Canon T3i with kit lens... great start...

Or do you want one that is fully automatic all the time, you just pick it up and shoot?

If you use a DSLR use one of the gun mounts to hold that shit some what steady...

or one of the big stick things.

Guys are any of ya'll planning to come to the photography get together at Lake Crabtree? Reason I ask is that I have a D7000 now, and this is my first one that will shoot video of any sort. I have done just a little bit of it but I would like to learn from some of ya'll that do this more seriously to see what kind of gear I would need as I think this would be a nice thing to learn. I am doing a wedding in June but just as a photographer. It will be my first chance to also try and video as well if I wish to do that, even if that just means setting it up on a tripod and leave it running during the ceremony.

^^i'll most likely be there, not sure if I'll bring all my video support gear but I'll probably bring a few basic things. I can deff answer any questions you may have about the workflow and the specifics of shooting video with a DSLR (although I have no experience with Canon in particular)

^g10 is great but used hf-s200 will have most of the functionality for a third of the price
