always thought they were dumb but i wouldn't mind something larger than my phone but smaller than my laptop to take to work. don't wanna invest more than $200 i'm checking out the nook color(w/android mod) , the playbook, and a touchpad(w/android). what are you guys thoughts on these? 2/28/2012 8:01:18 PM |

Touchpad with Android is great. I gave my girlfriend it and she's managing quite well with it. I have a Nook Color with Android on it and it's not bad. Not that great, but it gets it done. The playbook, if they ever release the Android player has potential but I doubt it. I'd go with either touchpad or one not on your list in Amazon Kindle Fire if I was looking. 2/28/2012 9:10:29 PM |

I have the playbook and the OS is rock solid stable. The construction is very nice and lasts a good 12 hours playing videos with decent stereo speakers. I like mine, but the down side is that the app market sucks. If you have a blackberry cell phone, then it makes it a no brainer since the tethering options is suppose to be kickass, but if not, its a luke warm ideal tablet as long you are like me and just need a good browser support, email access, watch some videos, read some pdf's and a few kobo books.
For $200 for the 16gb model, it spanks the kindle fire stock to stock, but yeah it might be a bit better if someone develops the android for it, but I really doubt they would. There's a few other good choices on the market besides the playbook around the 200 price tag. 2/28/2012 9:32:48 PM |

Didn't realize you actually mentioned the Touchpad in OP. I would definitely take that over any of the other choices.

I have a rooted Nook Color and shit is great. I had it for quite a while and didn't root it because I wanted to give the native B&N software a chance, but they just haven't delivered on it as much (though I still enjoy it much more than having an e-ink hardware Kindle). Rooting it has been fun.
I have no idea how it compares to Kindle Fire though. I just got a DROID Razr and have been ignoring my tablet. 2/29/2012 12:19:53 AM |

^agreed the nook color is a great sub 200 option, but the HTC Flyer or HTC View are both better options for the <200 price point 2/29/2012 5:24:36 AM |

Wanted to bump this extremely old topic.
I've toyed with the idea of a tablet off and on for a while, and was thinking about making the plunge.
My ideal use for a tablet would mostly be web browsing, email, youtube videos and very occasional games (probably nothing more complicated than a candy crush type game...don't do any major gaming on them).
I have an iPhone, but not married to the IOS family.
A lot of the "budget friendly" tablet lists I've read are still putting the 2013 Nexus 7 on the list...is that still viable? Don't want to buy something that has old hardware and is going to crap out in the next year.
I've also seen some on the Amazon Fire tablets, but a common complaint was you don't have access to the google play store, so your apps are very limited. Is that a big issue? What type of major apps are missing from the fire line? What about the OS? Is Amazon pretty good about keeping it up to date? I don't really understand the numbering/naming scheme of the Android system, so I'm a bit confused when comparing kit-kat to lollipop to Sangria.
I have a 3 year old in the house, and I wouldn't mind letting her play with it from time to time. Any type of "parental" feature would be a nice benefit, but I don't require it.
I am not a prime member (I know, probably the only one) if that means the Fire tablet would be a dud without it.
In looking over everything, it seems like it boils down to the Fire HD 7 vs Nexus 7. And while I know the Nexus 7 is still about $100 more expensive (and actually is about $250 instead of $200), is it worth another $100 for what I think I'm going to use it for?
I didn't see a thread on the Fire HD, which makes me wonder if that should be a sign....
Also, I'm fine with wi-fi only models.

any of the fire tablets have an excellent kids mode built in and if you buy the 'kid friendly' model, you get a 2 year accident warranty free 1/3/2015 6:02:09 AM |

I have a first gen Fire (that I'm looking to upgrade soon) and my gf has a Nexus 7. While having the extra apps is nice, if you are mostly just using it for web browsing, you won't notice much of a difference. The only thing I'm a bit sad about is missing out on some board game apps. 1/3/2015 12:02:45 PM |

I love my Asus Transformer T100, plus came with free office and windows 8 isn't so bad, although it costs a little more than $200.
The Mrs. got an RCA android-based tablet for Christmas for less than $100. The lack of Flash player is annoying and the plastic keyboard kind of feels like a cheap toy, but functionally it's fine.

i ordered a HP stream 7 primarily for tuning the racecar but after ordering I read up on it.. seems like it will actually be a pretty decent little tablet (my pre-review) 2/6/2015 9:18:14 AM |

I thought HP got out of the tablet market based on their losses on the Touchpads. Now this Stream 7 you mentioned is another $99 HP tablet? 2/6/2015 12:31:36 PM |

so i got the 7 and realized that they had a stream 8 which has 4g and includes 200mb a month free for life. ordered the 8 and i am using it now. i must say windows 8 is pretty decent on this tablet. I have been using this for tuning my car, torrents, youtube...a week ago i didnt even know tablets that ran full windows 8 even existed, much less at this price point and quality.
i had a decent netbook for tuning and this tablet is so much better for my purposes
