other thread was dead. looking to rent, preferably a single-person dwelling, in the charlotte area. where should I look? how much do I have to spend to have a reasonably safe and quiet place?

any idea what side of town you'd be working in

there are plenty of nice areas, but i'd assume you'd rather live in a nice area with a 10-15 minute commute compared to a 30-45 minute commute

i'd live on the northern end of 85 and avoid the heart of charlotte as much as possible

I've only seen the apartments sprinkled around WT Harris north of I-85 and they're pretty nice. You'll probably have a lot of Indian neighbors who work at IBM or whatever's there

I have one bedrooms in my building (1315 East blvd.) listed for ~$1000/mo in Dilworth.

Should give you a ballpark.

You want a house or townhome all to yourself?

Southend or Dilworth would be my opinion. Anywhere south, southeastis totally fine and most places directly east of downtown are fine. Avoid the north (except NoDa) and completely avoid the west.

If you go for the house option, do a thorough check on the crime in the area. I almost put down a deposit on a place in Charlotte before a family CMPD friend told us to absolutely not live there.

The realtor, of course, said the area was perfectly fine.

I have a good friend who lives in Southend...he walks to work (Wells Fargo), the gym, bars/restaurants, Panthers games, Club Cabaret (when the situation presents itself). Pretty much the only reason he needs car is to hit the grocery store, go out of town, or maybe on weekends to hit other parts of Clt, e.g. NoDa. I'm jealous

I have a friend that has a pretty big house in noda and I think he pays around $1000. Its right next to where fat city used to be. I enjoyed hanging out there.

How bad is the UNCC area? say, 7400 N Tryon? I'm lookin to stay in an extended stay hotel for the first couple months, and the only thing close is by Tyvola, which seems to be ghettoooooooo according to Supplanter's map. The next closest is the N Tryon place. Is that gonna be a decent place to stay for a couple months while I scout the area for a rental house?

ok, another stupid question. what do yall think of using the LYNX to get downtown? I know that's southside, but is it ok to use? Too expensive? What's the status on that thing?

Lynx will work if you live south of center city. lots of apartments/houses within walking distance of bland and east blvd station.

train is about 60 a month. otherwise, expect to pay about $5 per day to park in center city.

I live in between I85 and I77 off of WT Harris in a place called Brookstone rought 2 miles west of the IBM place. I like it convienient access to the highways and both the university area and Northlake shopping areas near by. I have heard issues about crime living near the university area but my area seems pretty nice.

My wife takes the Lightrail into work and she loves it. Gets a chance to read, don't have to worry about traffic, etc. We live closest to the Archdale station, but usually go one up to the Tyvola station. As long as you're east of South Blvd, you're good to go.
