Phil Steele's Preseason All-ACC Teams Phil Steele's 2012 College Football Preview will be available in the next couple of weeks, and eight NC State players were named to his preseason All-ACC teams with junior cornerback David Amerson being the line first-team pick.
Amerson is considered by many to be the top returning defensive back in the country, so his selection is certainly no surprise. He finished last season with a NCAA-leading 13 interceptions, breaking the school and ACC record and the second-most in NCAA history.
A Walter Camp and ESPN first-team All-American, he also won second-team honors from Sports Illustrated, the Associated Press, Yahoo, CBSSports.com, Rivals, and Phil Steele. Amerson also won the Jack Tatum Award, which is given to the nation's top defensive back
Junior center Camden Wentz, tackle R.J. Mattes, and safeties Earl Wolff and Brandan Bishop were tabbed third-team selections by Steele.
Wentz will be a three-year starter at center and Mattes has started since his redshirt freshman season. Wolff was a honorable mention All-ACC selection in 2011 after totaling 113 tackles. Bishop had 99 tackles and five interceptions last season and has 37 career starts under his belt.
NC State's other three selections, quarterback Mike Glennon, punter Wil Baumann, and tailback Tony Creecy, were fourth-team picks.
Glennon threw for 31 touchdowns in 2011, that mark ties as the second-highest mark in school history, second only to Philip Rivers, and he tied the State single-game record for touchdown throws with five in the win over Maryland.
Baumann was one of only six true freshmen in the FBS ranks who started at punter last season, and he finished the year ranked third in the ACC in punts placed inside the 20 yard line with 21.
Creecy was a reserve tailback in 2011 but is expected to compete for the starting job this fall.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but if Glennon is the 4th best QB in the ACC this year we are screwed. I was thinking 2nd? Who else is any good in the ACC? 5/29/2012 11:54:33 PM |
wstcoastwolf All American 1642 Posts user info edit post |
He was considered 4th best last season and everyone considered above him returns. I don't think his rank relative to other ACC quarterbacks is that great of a concern.
In all honesty, there are no great quarterbacks and basically 1-6 are pretty interchangeable.
