I just got offered a job that will pay 50% more than my current position. Anybody get a big jump like that before?

Going from a part-time full-time (40 hours/week but no benefits) to a real full-time with benefits position. It was only about a $6000/yr raise but adding benefits including fully paid health insurance onto that makes it more valuable overall. So, being not long out of school, it was something like a 35-40% raise all things considered.

But that was a long, long, time ago. My two most recent salary adjustments were both pay cuts.

read an article a while back that opined that while women are paid on performance, men are often paid based on potential. implications of this are that men should basically jump to new companies every few years to maximize earnings, while women are better off staying at the same company and building a long-term track record there. while obviously not a blanket truth, thought it was somewhat insightful.

I've worked at the same company for 5 years now and really enjoy what I do (and don't think I'd get paid much more somewhere else unless I took a huge jump in responsibility). I haven't gotten any huge individual raises, but raises have been steady and I make 60% more than I did when I started. The biggest raise was probably when I got my PE license and promotion recently which amounted to about 10%.

At my current job I started as a contractor making about $30 an hour. When they converted me (and a lot of other people) to full-time I had to fill out an application through the website. At the part for expected salary I wrote $65k, they offered me $85k. My jaw hit the floor.

43% raise switching jobs last year (same job diff company)

After my first real job I took a contracting position making decent money. I learned three things about six months into the position:

1) The contracting firm for whom I worked had pocketed raises in the past and been caught by the parent company.
2) I was being paid much less than I could have been anywhere else.
3) The director at the client REALLY liked me.

I ended up getting about a 60% pay bump at the same position.

my girlfriend just interviewed for a job that would double her salary. When that happens, my theory is that you were underpaid at your last job, not that you just got twice as good at something.

also, I don't think it's really a raise if you switch companies. Biggest raise I got was when I was promoted from engineer II to engineer III, it was ~20% increase in salary.

the wake county superintendent proposed a 1% pay raise for wake county teachers... would be our first bump in pay in about half a decade (of course it's not REALLY a bump in pay considering we have to pay more and more for healthcare every year)

Similar here. I get about a 5% raise each year which definitely isn't too bad (particularly when it was in the heart of the recession), but I actually wish there was some variability.

I'm paid well so I can't really complain, but it does make it feel like whatever you do doesn't matter one way or the other.

Yeah, my raises at my current company have been between 2-3% every year, but I started out at an ok salary, so can't complain too much.

^^ I'd probably be in that range (closer to 40% but still) if I wasn't counting the recent raise I got for my PE and such which gave me a big boost.

In general, it seems like the biggest raises come from job-hopping, but if you are actually happy with your company and your position and you are getting paid a competitive wage, I don't see much of an incentive to hop around for a little extra money.

Biggest pay raise I got percentage wise was going from a small school district tech to senior tech at UNC. About 35%. Wasn't phenomenal, but there really wasn't any room to move up at the local district.

Being a state employee who's only worked one job, the biggest pay increase I ever got was when I went to Texas last summer to work on an incident management team for their fires. NC pimped me out to Texas who got federal money to pay for the fires.
I made $7k before taxes on a 19 day dispatch.

after a year or so at my current job i got a 10% raise (mostly bc my job duties changed). they used to try to do reviews once a year & include raises. the economy went to shit, & the architecture/construction side of things still hasn't recovered...so no raises, bonuses, nothing in the last few years. i'm just very lucky & thankful i still have a job at all.

In between the company laid me off and rehired me, so I guess that period of unemployment was 18k.

I never did any internships or co-ops while I was in school so I'm not quite making the average salary for engineering (and I only graduated this past December). I'm going to graduate school in NYC so I'm hoping once I find a job up there I'll get a nice pay cut to account for the increased costs of living up there.

^^at least they're getting any raise. i'd be grateful for anything additional, especially a cost of living raise (not just a raise for doing a good job). my lack-of-raise won't cover my additional health care costs, the dropped dental coverage, etc. small business sucks.
