Old thread was dead. Sitting at 93% on rottentomatoes.

Came out yesterday. I saw it and thought it was great. Really fun movie. Very different, good humor, lots of twists. Fran Kranz was awesome.

Definitely go into the movie as blind as possible. Don't read wiki as it will ruin the movie.

I saw it last night, sat through it thinking WTF is this movie about? Finally the ending came and tied it all together. It has some decent action to keep me interested, overall I think it was pretty stupid. I wouldnt waste money on it again.

Eh. I saw it last night because all the reviews saying stuff like this piqued my interest:

Quote :
"Definitely go into the movie as blind as possible. Don't read wiki as it will ruin the movie."

but...***SPOILER ALERT***

I wasn't that surprised or shocked by any of the "twists" that took place. It's cool how they have the very meta extra layer of the organization (and I guess that is sort of a "twist," but not in the usual definition of a plot development twist), but you can pretty much figure out everything that's going to happen within the first three office/organization scenes. I remember reading a review that said they don't hint at any of the coming twists, and I couldn't disagree more. I felt like they STRONGLY hinted at every single twist (at least one cryptic reference to "the ancients" and such early on in the movie, and all the blood spilling through the funnel system when someone died, etc.). I wasn't totally surprised by any of the plot developments. That didn't bother me necessarily, I just don't understand why all the reviews are painting it as though the shit comes out of nowhere. That's not to say that it isn't highly unusual for a horror movie, though; clearly, it is. I thought it was an interesting, clever movie, but it was a little too gimmicky overall. It was alright.

please.

scream 4, Hobo with a Shotgun, fright night, rubber, attack the block

I did see T&D well before it's netflix release, I forgot that didn't happen for a while.

but I suppose what i really meant was "Cabin in the Woods is a great entry into the land of great com-horror films like Tucker and Dale vs. Evil and Drag Me to Hell and Scream and Scream 2."

Cabin in the Woods is "Joss Whedon makes a horror film".

If this seems like something that would interest you, then you should see it.

If it doesn't, it may not be your thing, but it's definitely not your typical horror movie.

Yeah it was very Whedon-y, the man loves him some underground complexes. I really didn't anticipate it being as funny as it was, though that was somewhat diminished by the retarded stoners in our theater that repeated EVERY Fran Kranz line super loudly.

Just saw it. Awesome movie. I really like how they kind of had homages to some classic horror movies with all the monsters in the containment area like Hellraiser and It. It's really interesting how just about any horror movie could be "explained" by this one.

One question I had though... what was the deal with the glitch that stopped the cave-in? They never really explained it. I was expecting some kind of divine intervention or something. And also, lol at the unicorn impaling that one guy.

^FROM WHAT I GATHERED:

The stoner fiddled with that electric panel, which caused a glitch. I can't remember exactly, but maybe it messed up communication between the main control room and the people responsible for imploding the tunnel.

When Richard Jenkins goes to those folks like "What the fuck why didn't you blow the tunnel," they say something like "we didn't receive the order!" I think?

and yeah the horror references were great. The merman was hilariously shitty. And I think I saw the girl from The Ring at one point, walking slowly toward someone. Was the ballerina girl from silent hill or something or was she an original creation?

^agree. I loved it. The Whedon dialogue was great in the horror movie, and I enjoyed how they handle all of the horror movie tropes.

I was hoping for some sort of stinger after the credits, but I don't know that there would have been anything else to tell

Stop reading this thread and go see the movie.

Saw it and thought it was a lot of fun.. I totally agree that you shouldn't read up on it before seeing it. Go in blind.

I really enjoyed it. The best way I could think to describe it without giving away too much is that it's a satirical (but not condescending) horror movie about making horror movies that is very self-aware at a times.

Or, it's a movie within in a movie, both of which are self-aware horror movies.

I agree with DillyDalient in that none of it was really that unpredictable. But there are different reasons to go in blind.

If you like horror and Joss Whedon stuff in general, go in blind simply so it's all fresh (some things are better experienced than heard about and then experienced). If you like horror stuff even though you know most of is cliche, ridiculousness... go in blind or at least know the gist of it. If you're iffy about horror stuff but are kind of curious, I think it wouldn't hurt to know more about the plot/tone of the movie --- you'd probably pick more up that way from the get go.

Spoiler (I normally wouldn't do this since the movie is already out, but this movie is a little different)........

I loved when the guy finally met his dream monster.

^^ Probably my biggest laugh of the movie. Especially since I realized what was going to happen in the scene as soon as it started and burst out laughing in an otherwise quiet (but packed) theater.

The movie has predictable parts, but that doesn't take away from the entertainment at all.

^ yeah me too, nobody was laughing and i was cracking up. At first I thought it was going to be the original little girl. The irony that he unleashed this girl on them, and then she's the one that gets him (especially since they had just shown her arrive) But then I realized that we hadn't seen it yet, and figured that would be the case and couldn't wait to see if it was anything like I imagined when I saw it written on the board. It was so much more awesome/ridiculous than I thought it would be.

And yeah, it's very predictable at parts... but not in a bad way at all. Honestly, you should figure out what is going on in the first act. Not everything that will unfold, but what is going on overall to a certain extent.

20 minutes into the movie:

"Another one of these movies. I've seen this a million times before."

After the movie was over:

"Well, that certainly wasn't what I expected."

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and knew nothing about it going into it. Don't spoil this movie for yourself if you don't want it ruined.

Also, I lolled hard at the beginning when it had to the operators in their work attire just leisurely talking and driving around in the golf cart then out of nowhere "THE CABIN IN THE WOODS" is splashed on the screen in blood with all the screaming and death metal music.

lol at Deadites. Nice reference. I'd like to see a zoomed out screenshot of all of the rooms containing the monsters to see what other references they had in there. I do remember seeing twin girls holding hands, an obvious reference to the Shining.

Also, I just realized something... what was the purpose of the one-way mirror? Just another way to try and get the characters aroused enough to commit some kind of sin?

there is a pretty sweet bong at one point too. Marty's dialogue in the first 25 minutes is the only good part of the movie- basically anything he says up through when he awkwardly walks away from the gas stop dude

I, too, thoroughly enjoyed Funny Games. Proving that horror films can easily rely on dialogue and solid characterization.

Cabin in the Woods makes all sorts of nods to all sorts of horror films (outside the obvious monsters and such) and that's one of its most endearing qualities.
