lol filters block all the good stuff. Can't post what you can't see.
I'm pretty stoked about working thirds, it'll be 9:30pm to 8am. The alternating weekends will take some getting used too, but I'll have weeks where I have 4 days off in a row so when I take a vacation I can take a day or two of PAL and end up with a week off. 5/12/2012 12:00:58 AM |

My favorite shift in the world was swings (3pm-11pm)
Minus Fridays...because we had to stay till like 2-5 am some nights, but it balanced out, some nights we got out at like 7 pm 5/12/2012 12:07:10 AM |

I would never want to work a third shift. I've done second shift work before, that lasted till after midnight. It sucks. I still say the best job you can have is a M-F 9:00 am-5:30/6:00 pm shift because then you can actually be social and see your friends and family. My shift got moved from 1:00 pm- 9:30 pm to 11:00 am-7:30 pm and then to 10:00 am-6:30 pm. Once it moved to ending at 7:30 pm I started playing coed soccer on the week nights instead of being at work late. Life is so much more fun now. 5/12/2012 12:17:54 AM |

that shit is the absolute worst schedule ever. you have to take time off to get anything done because every other business has the same work hours as you.
i miss shift work bad. i was on rotating 12 hr shifts. we got 7 days off every 5th week. that's like 10 vacations a year without even considering your actual vacation days. you just used your holidays like vacation time and took them whenever you wanted. after you added it all up with vacation and holidays you worked less than half the days in a year. fuck working 5 out of 7 days with a few weeks off each year. i could get all sorts of shit done on my first 2 days off and then spend 4 days at the coast fishing and then still have a day to come back and rest up before going back to work.5/12/2012 8:03:09 AM |

My younger brother works 2nd shift and really dislikes it. He goes to work at 3 pm and comes home anywhere from 12-2 am. It wouldn't be so bad if he just went to bed when he gets home, but he has trouble winding down after work. So many nights, he doesn't make it to bed until like 3 or 4 am and sleeps until noon or so the next day. He feels like he doesn't have a lot of time to see his gf or get anything done because of the way things work out.
My older brother spent 20 years on 3rd shift and loved it. He hated to leave it, but it was problematic once he became a father. The stress was less on third shift and he was left alone to do his job without a lot of management. He did well by sleeping until 4 pm, having dinner with his wife, running errands and hanging out with his wife, she'd go to bed and he would go to work around 10 pm, and then they'd see one another over breakfast in the morning, and then he'd go to bed by 7. He misses it. 5/12/2012 8:41:55 AM |

sucks working all weekend when everyone else is doing stuff, and i dont get much sleep. but come monday morning it is so nice knowing that i have almost 5 days off every week. will probably only work this schedule for another year or so but for right now, i enjoy it 5/12/2012 9:11:42 AM |

Actually, 9 am to 6 pm is nicer than 8 am to 5 pm. My bank, my dentist, my doctor, and most other places open at 7 am or 8 am. You can still get stuff done.
I don't care for weekend hours, shift work, or later shifts because most people seem to work M-F 8 to 5. Most sports are played at night, or on the weekends. Most parties are at night, or on the weekends, and pretty much anything else that is fun happens at those times too. It sucks to be at work when you know everyone else is at home watching the game, or having fun at a party.5/12/2012 11:36:06 AM |
NeuseRvrRat hello Mr. NSA! 35376 Posts user info edit post |
guess it helps that i don't give a fuck about parties or watching sports on tv. the things i enjoy are generally done during daylight hours. hunting, fishing, etc.
if i do have to work straight 8 hr days, i like 6:30-3:00.

i work for a 24 hour department, and as such, our schedules are weird. i actually work a rotating schedule of four days on, four days off, regardless of weekends or holidays. on days i do work, it's 7am-7pm, with breaks.
i really enjoy the abundance of time off, but more importantly, you always have days off during the week to get things done. l have no clue how people working 9-5 or whatever monday through friday ever get their hair cut, go to the doctor, or the like without being massively inconvenienced. 5/12/2012 12:01:46 PM |
Big4Country All American 11907 Posts user info edit post |
^You get your hair cut on Saturday, Sunday, or after work. Most people that show up at my job after going to the doctor usually get there about a half hour late, or so. You don't have to take the whole day off. Just arrange your appointment, so it isn't at 2:30 pm.

Yeah I'm going to like third shift I think. I get to have breakfast with the wife and have supper with her too. Once my schedule switches to my regular schedule of 10hr/4days I'll have 4 days off in a row every other week. I'm not due in till 9:30 so I have plenty of time to see my niece play her sports. I have time to hang out with the wife. My commute will be so nice. I'll have free time in the morning to run errands, yard work, or whatever else might need to be done. The only thing I do miss is sleeping beside the wife and vice versa for her.
I think 3rd shift is pretty great so far. 5/15/2012 2:48:39 AM |

3rd shift here, but it's getting a little bit old. I worked 3rd shift all through college to pay the bills, and even had a part time 3rd shift job on top of my regular job a few years ago, so I'm used to it, but lately it's really killing my social life. I hardly ever see friends anymore, and it's going on 3 years straight now so I'm about done with it.
January is it for me come hell or high water, I'll miss the quarterly bonus and the 4 day work week, but it'll be nice to be on a normal schedule again. 5/15/2012 8:49:44 AM |

Flex time, baby My employer lets me come and go as I please as long as I log 40 hours/week. So one day I might work 10 hours and then the next day leave two hours early to get my errands done. Or if I have a dentist appointment at 3:30, I come into work around 7am, work through my lunch and leave at 3pm to get to my appointment.5/15/2012 9:37:46 AM |

buy some blackout curtains if you haven't all ready.

I have a set of these in navy and they work very well. Just don't buy them in a light color like some of the reviewers did.

I work for Puget Sound Naval Shipyard as a part of the Nuclear Regional Maintenance division as a nuclear repair engineer fixing nuclear stuff on submarines.
I normally work days, but volunteered to go back shift. so now I am on 12 on 12 off. Horrible conditions for a family since my woman works 1030-530 and I work 530-530.
