I might have a Toshiba netbook for you. I bought it in 2010 and loved it. I got an iPad from work so I haven't used the netbook much lately. I just have to figure out what to do with all my music...

I love my Toshiba netbook, and I put a lot of effort into finding a netbook I would like. I stand by that they make the best.

^ The Asus Netbooks are very good as well. Very solid, and NEVER had a problem with ANY aspect of it and I had it since 2010 as well.

how are netbooks vs. Ipads? I've been thinking about getting one or the other. I'm not sure of the fascination people have with Ipads. I prefer something with a real keyboard, but I think netbook screens are smaller than Ipads?

I think it depends on what you're looking for. I love the iPad for the apps, but not necessarily typing. If you plan on typing quite a bit, I would go for a netbook, although you can buy a bluetooth keyboard for the iPad. As far as screen size goes, they are about the same to me.

Same for my and my Toshiba, but I've had an Asus one for a week for a test drive. They were close competitors, and the Toshiba was more expensive, but I liked the design and feel a lot better. Asus netbooks are still very good and worth the price to me.
