I have had a set of Hella Micro DE driving lights sitting around for about 2 years. They were supposed to find their way onto the VW but that never happened.
The Nissan came with fog lights from the factory that are worthless. I originally thought that they didn't work, as there isn't any visible change at night when I turn them on and off. I can only see that they are on or off when I pull up to my garage at night.
[user]Hiro9/user] was in town for my BDay, and the wife is in the Caribbean, so what better time to work on the car?
We wen to home depot and found the proper PVC fittings for the project. The 4'' to 2'' reducer fit the bill perfectly, and we picked up a few nuts and bolts as well.
The assembly comes apart into a cup, and the light bulb housing. This was a nice surprise that made the job a lot easier. I just had to cut the back of the cup off to allow for the deeper Hella lights.
All said and done, it took about 6 hours because of figuring out everything as I went. To do it again would easily be done in under an hour.

SV, the mid level. I'll get night pictures in about an hour.
When I bought these lights, they were $160, now they are $135.

^based on the pattern in the picture it appears the beam is focused right in front of the car. are these driving or fog lights? the beam doesn't appear wide enough to be fog and aimed too low to be driving. 6/3/2012 9:39:10 PM |

They are more driving light than fog. I may need to do some more work on their aim, as right now they fill in below the headlights. I'll know after tomorrow night and my long drive home from work. 6/3/2012 10:01:31 PM |

Quote : | "Front fog lamps provide a wide, bar-shaped beam of light with a sharp cutoff at the top, and are generally aimed and mounted low.[10][11][12] They may produce white or selective yellow light, and are intended for use at low speed to increase the illumination directed towards the road surface and verges in conditions of poor visibility due to rain, fog, dust or snow. They are sometimes used in place of dipped-beam headlamps, reducing the glareback from fog or falling snow, although the legality varies by jurisdiction of using front fog lamps without low beam headlamps. Use of the front fog lamps when visibility is not seriously reduced is often prohibited (for example in the United Kingdom), as they can cause glare to other drivers, particularly in wet pavement conditions, as well as harming the driver's own vision due to excessive foreground illumination.[13] The respective purposes of front fog lamps and driving lamps are often confused, due in part to the misconception that fog lamps are necessarily selective yellow, while any auxiliary lamp that makes white light is a driving lamp. Automakers and aftermarket parts and accessories suppliers frequently refer interchangeably to "fog lamps" and "driving lamps" (or "fog/driving lamps"). In most countries, weather conditions rarely necessitate the use of fog lamps, and there is no legal requirement for them, so their primary purpose is frequently cosmetic. They are often available as optional extras or only on higher trim levels of many cars. Studies have shown that in North America more people inappropriately use their fog lamps in dry weather than use them properly in poor weather.[14]" |
