Russia doesn't want to establish a precedent of intervention to protect civilians from governments, because Russia likes to bully around its own civilians in some regions. Chechnya, for example. Although that can't explain all of it, because Russia can veto any U.N. intervention anywhere.

More likely, Russia doesn't have a lot of allies, and it can't afford to go around abandoning the ones it has -- or ignoring ones it might pick up. That gets combined with old zero-sum international relations theory, where they assume anything that opposes our interest must be in their interest.
