In the spirit of the recent weight lifting threads.......

So there was the old study by consumer reports back in 2010 stating that EAS Myoplex as well as Cytosport Muscle Milk had trace amounts of heavy metals: Lead, Cadmium, Aresnic higher than the minimum safe intake. I tend to view this with skepticism, in that these same metals can be found in much higher amounts in various regular foods including meat, vegetables, and tap water.

I personally take about 2 Cytosport Monster Milk premade shakes a day simply for convenience. I also use the Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey and Casein, as well as Hydro Builder occasionally.

I personally think that the consumer reports study is flawed in that they based the levels on a 110lbs person, when most bodybuilders who consume such supplements is going to be much heavier. I also recall reading that the FDA later tested Cyto sport products and found them to be within safe levels.

I know there was a push for more federal regulation of bodybuilding supplements, so I tend to view these types of studies with a bit of skepticism. Also, I have been unable to locate any additional recent studies that coroborate these claims or make new ones. The consumer reports study is 2 years old, and I have searched for more recent findings but all I see references the one study from 2010. That also makes me skeptical that no one else has tried or been able to replicate the findings.

Anyways, what are some supplemets you all use or like, as well as your thoughts on the heavy metals study.

I usually take ON whey and ON casein, but occasionally I end up with other products if they're on the clearance table at Vitamin Shoppe. I did go through about 2 lbs of EAS Myoplex about 6 months ago. I also eat 5ish servings per week of predator fish (mostly tuna). When I had a physical last month I asked that they test for heavy metals, mostly due to the fish intake, and everything came back fine. YMMV.

the best supplement anyone can use in the gym to maximize their gain is a tapout beanie and a loud grunt with every movement.

seriously.

El-Oh-El

Back in the day when I did collegiate/club rugby:
Whey Protein - ON whey
Weight Gainer / Quick bfast / Late snack - Cytogainer
Multivitamin - whatever floats your boat
Fish Oil - find something that's not fishy that has 3/6/9
Good ol fashioned creatine monohydrate

Beyond that, you can get into some more interesting stuff (I heard awesome review about jack3d for lifting) but that is more than enough.

Above all else, drink lots of water and eat right.

This is cool and interactive. On the left, the supplements are categorized as strong, good, or promising evidence for its efficacy. If you click on any of the bubbles, it will take you to the peer reviewed study.

Supplements are for pussies/cheaters. Grow some balls and knock out a few more reps...stop waiting for your "shake" to do your work for you.

Jbrick, you would compare supplements to exercise rather than eating...

I agree with the more natural approach, and I personally therefore limit my supplements to whey and casein. I do use the monster milk though as a meal replacement because for my fucked up schedule it is convenient.

I am interested in hearing others thoughts on the 2 year old heavy metals study though

upon further inspection, there certainly are a lot of fitness threads in the lounge. I agree a fitness section would be kind of cool.

from the study:

Keep in mind the study is based on the average American consuming 3 servings a day.

Of course there are heavy metals in whey, how do you think we get so swole. I want my whey to be as hardcore as I am. They need to release a diamond cut steel flavor

Anyone have recommendations for a soy protein? My wife mentioned she would like to start using it but I don't know much about the difference in soy proteins and whey.

Why would you want to use soy protein? Unless you have an allergic condition I do not see any advantage to using soy, especially considering it is typically more expensive.

Honestly that's part of my question. She said she liked it because it tastes better than Whey. I am fine with using Whey or Soy, just don't know a whole lot about the difference. No allergies to speak of, so whey isn't a problem to use.

^^ Soy produces an estrogen response in dudes, so I've always read. I also seriously doubt it's as complete in amino acids as whey or egg.

if someone thinks soy protein tastes better than whey, then they need to stop buying garbage whey protein.

also, guys have no reason eating soy protein. the phytoestrogens in soy can wreck the negative feedback loop of the HTPA, and that's going to be a lot worse than not getting in enough protein.

I rarely do shakes anymore; but that's mainly because shakes just make me hungrier and I'd rather eat a chicken breast or a beef tenderloin.

you'd be wrong. soy produces enough of an estrogen response that it recommended in lieu of medicine for postmenopausal women.

FWIW, weed has a similar effect.
