Ok, so I'm going camping/4-wheeling this weekend and I need some ice because stupid mother nature says she has to throw some triple digits at us while we will be out. I intend on bringing a marine cooler and ideally I'd like to buy some ice blocks as opposed to bags, so I don't have to worry about buying more through out the weekend.
The problem lies in that I don't know where to get this locally (have only ever bought blocks at the beach). Someone suggested dry ice, but since there will be good amounts of drinking at night, I don't want to run into any problems with that. Does anyone know where to buy blocks of ice locally? I'm looking for 10-20lb blocks and should only need about 40~ lbs worth. 6/25/2012 7:02:13 PM |

What about dry ice?
Call some catering companies. They might know of someone who does ice sculptures or something. Surely they would know who to contact about obtaining blocks of ice.

^You can get dry ice at Kroger for $1 per block. I've seen the freezer at the one on Strickland / Falls of Neuse. 6/25/2012 7:10:01 PM |

You might try the capital ice market and grill in the boylan heights area.

I've purchased large quantities of crushed ice there in the past but never any blocks, may be worth a shot though. 6/25/2012 7:41:26 PM |

excellent-I will give them a call- if they don't have it, they might know someone who will. I was also suggested this by a friend: http://www.manta.com/c/mmfc2t3/reddy-ice . I think they will have blocks, but that is a bit far for me to be going to get it (but it is better than no ice I guess!). I wish I had access to a large sub-zero freezer, because a neat trick is to take your first case of beer and throw it in the cooler and then cover it with water, and then freeze the whole thing.
Anyway, thanks for the ideas so far, and keep them coming! 6/25/2012 8:04:00 PM |

haha well I suppose these could be used to make micro luges
the reddyice place up by brier creek would have ice luge size blocks though. I'm still on the lookout for some place a little more local to buy some 10-15 pounders though 6/26/2012 8:48:40 PM |

you could freeze gallon jugs of water? that is pretty much my standard for "block" cooler ice. 6/27/2012 9:20:06 AM |

I was going to suggest Reddy Ice. If you're driving out west you could make the airport on your way I guess. 6/27/2012 9:25:00 AM |

^^that, or if they really need to be more block shaped, buy an appropriate sized plastic container & put water in it (just don't fill it all the way or put the lid on). 6/27/2012 9:43:12 AM |

I Googled and found several places... that sell bagged ice and block dry ice. and i figured rather than waste more of my free time than i need to, i might see if any of yall had some suggestions.
^^orly? that would b awesome because we are planning on camping off a trail whenever we feel we are far enough out and we have eough room for our 3 trucks and gear. would be nice to not have to red cup it!

i looked around on the USFS page for uwharrie & couldn't easily find alcohol regulations. i found that (what i mentioned earlier) mentioned in a forum as a copy/paste from an email from a ranger or somebody lol...but i've also heard that that's the rule too (word of mouth thru friends or whatever). you could call & ask. ] 6/27/2012 1:36:09 PM |

upon further review, reddyice says they do not sell block ice, despite what there website says. Ramscallions! 6/27/2012 1:52:35 PM |

Tater, are you guys 4-wheeling with trucks and jeeps or actual ATVs?
and who are the guys going, i don't recognize any of the names. DG buddies?] 6/28/2012 7:49:14 AM |

You know Nick, but the rest are DG buddies. And we are doing truck/jeep/land rover stuff... I won't touch an ATV again unless it is a utility to just toot around.
^^haha in calling around, I was told to call and ask hotels... but as it looks now I'm not gonna have too much time, so I'm gonna try Cary Ice Co in the AM and see what they have available (they are the only place in 20 numbers I called that said they could possibly have anything). Funny thing is, it is a guy who runs it out of his house and does it as a side business! 6/28/2012 6:42:47 PM |
