Olympics 2012: Irvington's Cullen Jones grabs trip to London, while Nathan Adrian wins 100-meter freestyle
Quote : | "OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- Nathan Adrian has won the 100-meter freestyle at the U.S. Olympic trials, while Cullen Jones took the second spot for London. Adrian led at the turn Friday night and never let up on the return leg, winning clearly in 48.10 seconds, the fourth-fastest time in the world this year. Jones went out strong, as always, and managed to hold on for second in 48.46. Matt Grevers was next (48.55), followed by Ricky Berens (48.80), which assures them of spots in the pool for the 400 free relay. Jimmy Feigen and 2008 Olympic relay star Jason Lezak could also be in the mix for that event after finishing fifth and sixth.

These Phelps/Lochte races have been dynamite in the trials. They are going to be gold/silver in the 3 events they race together. Will be interesting to see who takes gold. Lochte coming on is probably the best thing that could have happened for Phelps. It has prevented him from becoming complacent. 7/1/2012 10:56:23 AM |

The problem with the summer Olympics is that they don't have women's curling.

No Brazilian jiu-jitsu though. That needs to be an olympic sport soon. It's much more deserving of a spot than synchronized diving or rhythmic gymnastics.
Most of the summer olympics sucks. I'll watch the track and field (even though they're all juiced, on HGH, blood dopers, etc.) and swimming because the races are so close and so competitive. I'll watch women's beach volleyball for the ass, and I'll that's about it.
Olympic boxing is a travesty, the team sports are mostly made up of second rate guys or people for whom this isn't a very big deal (baseball, soccer, basketball).
Track & Field and swimming are really the only thing that makes the summer olympics anywhere near as enjoyable to watch as the winter games. 7/3/2012 4:09:45 AM |

Baseball isn't an Olympic sport anymore, because it's the middle of the MLB season and it makes no sense to have an international competition right now
Basketball would be interesting as long as the whole thing isn't just constant yakking about LeBron finally winning a ring

I find the World Baseball Classic to be a more fun tournament than whatever the IOC would have anyway. Unlike the IOC, at least MLB is honest that they're about making money.

as much as Gary Bettman hates having to cancel an All-Star game every four years he is a better commissioner for it. Not sure you'd see the same out of Bud Selig. But honestly, i don't think the ball players would care either way. Not that there isn't international pride in the majors (World Baseball Classic has been a modest success) but Olympic Hockey is a different animal.7/3/2012 4:28:16 PM |

MLB has made a lot of money on it compared to shutting down the majors for a weeks in the summer that'd lose them a lot of money. Even for baseball folks, John Manuel down the road at Baseball America will tell you the WBC blows the socks off of Olympic baseball.

I think baseball should be there more than something like modern pentathlon (the most pointless Olympic sport ever), but it's a sport like cricket or rugby union or ice hockey that is only popular in a handful of countries and if you let the handful of countries organize a competition in contrast to the IOC, it'd be a better competition. And I have little love lost for the IOC, they make the NCAA look unhypocritical by comparison.7/4/2012 10:57:58 AM |

How do people feel about the double amputee on the South African relay team? Seems like he might have an unfair advantage between the weight savings and the purpose-built carbon fiber blade feet.

They really can't though on the men's side because of Euro Cup and all of the league schedules around the world. That is why it went U-23 after 1988. Sepp Blatter along with some other people are even in favor of making it a U-20 tournament on the men's side, since a lot of clubs don't want to release their best players for it. The FIFA World Cup winner will always be considered the world champion anyway, so there is no real reason to have an Olympic soccer tournament. It is nothing but a second FIFA Confederations Cup.7/5/2012 8:39:47 PM |
