I haven't been in years, but I remember Blue Ridge being kinda gross last time I went. I'll happily pay extra to watch a movie in a clean theater.

I saw a movie at Six Forks Station which is an older theater, but I gotta say they had some really nice sound quality. Can anyone confirm or am I crazy?

Also any theater that doesn't serve beer will not make my top 3.

In most stadium seating auditoriums, there are only 4-5 rows that don't result in a bizarre angle from eyes to screen. In a regular auditorium, the seats in the front still require you to look up too much, but the majority of the seats have a nice angle, and in no seat are you sitting so high that you're looking down on the movie like it's a football game.

Raleigh Grande has been my preference the past several years. It's was also about 5 minutes from my house though.

^ as opposed to looking up at the screen like it's an air show? At least you have the option of those 4-5 rows. You can't be at that height with a flat or even slanted floor.

I know what you mean though. That being said, I'll take stadium to that all day. If you're getting stuck with the shitty seats in a large, stadium seating theater... you're doing something wrong. Those 4-5 rows have at least 10 seats/row (and we know it's more than that). That's 40-50 seats (more) for you to sit in. And most people don't go straight to those seats. Even on most opening weekends you only need to get there like 5 minutes before to get seats in those optimal (center of the screen at eye-level) rows at places like Raleigh Grande and Crossroads.


Question: Out of Carmike 16 on chapel hill road and Crossroads, any preferences? I just moved and i'm about 2.5 miles from one and 3.5 from the other. I'm very familiar with crossroads and galaxy, but Carmike is closest. I've just never been there.

Probably one of these cats that have to sit at the perfect angle at home, too, equidistant from all 5 speakers so you get the "full effect" of your home theater, even if you're watching Rizzoli and Isles.

whichever one is playing the movie i want to see, at the time i want to see it.

i very seldom go to the movies. MAYBE twice a year.

always liked blue ridge though, the first time i went, i couldn't believe how nice it was for the ticket price. great place to go if you don't stay up on new releases.

I will say though, if it weren't for people sitting in front of me and blocking my view, I too might prefer the traditional theaters.

the mission valley guy used to promote his speakers and setup during college at the midnight showings of the matrix movies. I never noticed a huge difference between the theaters.

^^ in theory the imax at marbles probably has the best sound system (as in good quality and not just loud). But A)it's expensive B) they don't show a lot of movies, C) if you don't get there pretty early, you can really get screwed on the seats (like possibly motion sickness inducing screwed)

In the past, I really liked crossroads but then they started turning their sound systems up louder than they needed to be and they were heavier on the bass than they needed to be, so I didn't care for it. And then I moved and haven't been to crossroads in years, so that may not be the case any longer. Duh, I saw spider-man there wednesday night. That was fine. -- And no problem getting a seat in those coveted 4-5 rows.

I generally think Raleigh Grande has the best, consistent experience in the general Raleigh area. North Hills is comparable I think, but I haven't seen as many movies there as Raleigh Grande or Crossroads.

i am also curious about this. the theater here in rocky mount is ass & i refuse to go to it anymore (blurry, audio doesn't match, audio skips & slurs, can hear the movie next door very clearly). we went to raleigh grande to see the avengers & the screen was blurry. major disappointment. i don't see movies in theaters often, but if i'm going to go i want a clear image & sound that at least matches up consistently with mouths. and stadium seating. please to suggest

I like Carolina Theater. Never crowded, the clientele doesn't raise a ruckus during the movie, and it's got that old theater charm.

I'm going to say the Rialto. It doesn't have the screens of the other theaters but its atmosphere can't be matched and it's in a pretty cool part of town.
