lol I know right?
I did not know the only requirement for a card to work was having the same slot...
I have an nVidia 6600 GT right now and I'm reading I might need a new power cord to hook the new card up?
Anybody want to help out with this? I know it should be easy but I'm trying to avoid the horror stories I'm reading online lol 8/9/2012 1:07:56 PM |

Can't find the card on newegg but from the picture it does look like it requires an additional power cable from your PSU.
It's not very likely that your dimension has the necessary power supply to work with that card. I'm not speaking with certainty since I haven't taken the time to find the reference for that card but if that black box in the upper left part is the connector that I think it is then you probably don't have the power supply for it.
Open your case and look for cables coming from your power supply. Are there any extra ones that aren't currently connected to anything with 6 pins?
Found this: http://www.bjorn3d.com/2009/09/visiontek-hd-3650-agp/
Looks like VisionTek's first revision used a floppy power connector which actually would probably work for you but the picture definitely looks like a standard 6-pin to me.
Have him send you a picture of the back and sides of the box to know for sure.

Which will most likely NOT work for the new card correct? 8/9/2012 1:58:00 PM |

You need one of these.
Or two of what you showed plus this maybe: http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-6-Inch-Express-Adapter-LP4PCIEXADAP/dp/B0007RXDDM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1344537300&sr=8-2&keywords=6+pin+molex+adapter
But like I said, get pictures of the back and sides of the box and we could tell you exactly what you need. How much is he asking for the card, btw. We might be able to find you a new card that will definitely work.

It isn't the only requirement, Noen was just being lazy. It needs enough power from the Power Supply Unit (PSU), as well as the proper cable connectors from the PSU, and enough physical space to fit inside the Case.8/9/2012 2:57:39 PM |

I once tried to use a lesser ATI card with a Dimension 8300 (I think it was an HD 2400), and I needed to upgrade my PSU, but then it worked okay.
Something weird happened when I upgraded to XP Service Pack 3, and the only way I could get the graphics working okay was to go back to the stock NVIDIA card.

Ok, the 3650 scores 247 on passmark: http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/mid_range_gpus.html
A comparable AGP card that you can actually still buy new is the 4350 which on newegg currently is 74 dollars.
So used I'd give him like 20 bucks worth of something. Maybe 25.
Thanks above for teaching me about AGP cards that need additional power. Totally skipped that hardware iteration (like most people I imagine).
You can get a 4670 for 112 dollars and it's as pretty significant jump on that card. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161337

That looks like a great card, but $112 is way way more than I was looking to spend. Not to mention I'd need a new power supply as well! 8/13/2012 1:20:08 PM |
