I just unpacked an old reciever, hooked it up and it powers up fine but theres no sound coming out. I tried plugging it into a different power source, listening to the radio on it and hooking up multiple devices but none produced sound. I also tried changing one of he speakers. I'm thinking it is done.

What kind of receiver should I buy?

needs:
-xbox(component/optical)
-direct tv(component/optical
-blu-ray(hdmi)
-5 speakers +woofer

I wouldn't mind if it wasn't hdmi compatiable or only had one optical port. I rather keep this as cheap as possible while still having dts5.1 capabilities.

what about a the probability of the receiver actually being broken and still powering up?

Well it depends on the receiver. Its entirely possible the digital stage is fine but the audio amplification stage isn't functioning properly . . . . that section typically runs on a different voltage (and that voltage output from the power supply could be shot).

If its a nice receiver might be worth having me take a look. Could be as simple as a few busted caps or a bad MOSFET, in which case I could have it up and running again for a lot less than you'd pay for a replacement.

I know this is probably a "rookie" thing to ask, but I'm going to do it anyway. My receiver has "A" and "B" speaker settings and I've seen in a recent move between houses that both "A" and "B" were off whenever I powered the unit up post move. I did not notice this at first, so I thought my receiver had a sound output issue.

Eventually, I realize that the display didn't look quite right and I flipped the "A" set of speakers on, then it worked fine. Have you verified that you don't have something similar happening?

Bump

I woke up to my receiver seemingly biting the dust. Audio still comes through fine but there's no signal from the receiver to the TV. Any ideas?

HA, it's the HDMI cable - it just decided to randomly be a piece of shit? How the fuck does a cable go bad without moving/being damaged

I am also in this boat. Finally bought a decent TV, but my receiver has no HDMI connections. For the time being I can connect devices directly to the TV and use the optical audio out to the receiver for my speakers, but I don't know how tenable that will be in the future as I add devices.

that's what I used to do but my newest tv only outputs 2.0 sound. artificial demand for device churn imo

I bought a Denon AVR 1611 three years ago. Awesome receiver. HDMI video/audio.

You can get this year's model for $329 on amazon.

You can spend A LOT of money on receivers. $300 is pretty cheap.

^^A new TV only outputs 2.0 where (I assume) the older ones would do 5.1? How very odd. I guess they're trying to force you to use the soundbar?

^^ I picked up a 1911 a few years back - it's awesome. I think the 1912 had just come out so I got it for about what that 1613 is going for - so if you can live with a slightly older model you can probably get a hell of a deal
