Cowboom is having a lap-off right now - tons of laptops, continuously rotating. You might get lucky. Concensus says to stay at condition 7 or better. Pay attention to what is, and isn't, included.
I actually came in Tech Talk to see if anyone was talking about it..
I'm considering upgrading my old laptop (ASUS G60VX-RBBX05 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220715) for something during this sale..
Found an HP Envy 15-1050nr 15.6 Laptop i7 1.6GHz 6GB 500GB DVDRW including everything except manuals in condition 7 for $550. Don't know whether or not to pull the trigger. 8/24/2012 12:01:34 PM |

This looks like a decent deal - http://tinyurl.com/9trfc2b. Then spend the extra $150 on an SSD and maybe some more RAM and it'll scream.] 8/24/2012 2:57:09 PM |

^Integrated graphics, terrible resolution, mediocre battery life for an average price. It's not a bad deal, but I wouldn't be pouring another 100-200 bucks into it.
The HP envy ^^ sounds like a good deal though. 8/24/2012 5:37:44 PM |

there are probably some good Macs in that price range

^^ True. I figure at the $350 price point you're probably not going to do that much better though (i3 is nice). The performance impact from an SSD if huge, so personally I'd place the priority on that if I was strictly limited to $500, so you'd have to buy a $400ish laptop and upgrade the HDD.
Obviously a more attractive option is to get a $500 and spend the $100 later on an SSD.
That envy does look nice...whats "condition 7" mean? I assume it's brand new right? 8/24/2012 6:18:36 PM |

^If I had 350-500 bucks to spend on a laptop, I would go with a refurb + warranty and then upgrade with SSD.
Condition 7 usually means light wear (small scratches on casing) 8/24/2012 9:17:51 PM |

I would think at the $500 price point you're not going to find anything that doesn't have integrated graphics. 8/24/2012 11:08:50 PM |

^ easy to find. Look at AMD APU's. A bit old and slow compared to more modern intel i series cpu's, but for the price, can't be picky. Plus the cpu in their apu's are no sloughs.
Just an example from last week, but you can find similar spec'd laptops every month.

I don't know what you guys do on your laptops, but integrated graphics is fine for me. I'd rather have the stronger CPU. 8/25/2012 12:48:49 PM |

I want a machine that can run one of those CUDA or AMD powered hash-crackers, like IGHASHGPU or IGRARGPU. 8/25/2012 1:13:40 PM |

bump since this thread title is relevant to my interests.
My 11 year old desktop is finally starting to die. Wife & I want to upgrade to a laptop so we can use it away from the computer desk. Frankly we don't need much horsepower...most of our usage will be office 365 and internet browsing/shopping/youtube.
I'd like it to have an HDMI out to connect to our TV (since State football will likely be relegated to a lot of ESPN3 this year ). It would also be nice to have bluetooth for broadcasting to a wireless speaker. I don't see the need for a touch screen.
Thoughts on the cheap laptop market? There are a lot of HPs out there and some Toshiba satellites. What's going to be the best bang for my buck in terms of performance and longevity?
