For biking on roads for a few miles each day, is there any difference between a $200 bike and a $2K bike (Excluding recumbent bicycles)?

so let me get this straight...
you're in grad school for chemical engineering and you're having trouble discerning the differences between a bike from walmart and a low end race bike from a bike shop?
let me see if I can help:
1. WHAT THE FUCK IS GOOGLE AND HOW DO I USE THE INTERNETS?
2. If you want to commute a few miles each day, why would you spend 2 grand on a bicycle?
3. One of these bikes will get stolen way faster than the other. Try locking an expensive bike to a bike rack while you go to class.
but seriously, to answer your question:
About $1,800.00 US. 8/18/2012 12:54:18 AM |

Bikes get stolen all the time, unfortunately. I'm somewhat of a purist and only have a single speed carbon race bike and never ride it on the street. If I didn't worry about it getting stolen, I'd probably ride it to places more often. That said, I've had no trouble having anything on a locking roof rack messed with so far.
Anyway, even for a commuter you can see a significant difference between a $200 bike and a $2000 bike. I assume you can afford more than $200 by your question so if $2k is too much I'd suggest spending at least $500, and consider lightly used bikes. I briefly rode to NCSU from Cary but it's too dangerous for my taste. 8/18/2012 10:47:42 AM |

Depending on what "a few miles" is, I probably wouldn't spend $500, but definitely get something used. 8/18/2012 11:33:49 AM |

Bikes are some of the most overpriced machinery out there right now due to the biking renessaince that US is going through right now. While oversupply is starting to drive the prices down in general (I see nicely built bikes to appear on discount sites at least once a week) there is simply no reason mid-range commuter hybrid bikes should cost as much money as they do.
How much you should spend on the bike depends on how far and how often you plan to ride it, where you will store it (at home and at work/school), how long you plan to keep it, and how stylish you want to appear while riding it. I would say for commuting there is a difference between a $200 and a $600-800 bike, but much less difference between $800 and $2000 bike.
I found that mid-range used bikes are not really sold at much of a discount compared to the brand new models with same or better components. You can score a deal on a box-store beater or a high-end model by shopping on CL though. 8/20/2012 1:12:36 PM |

H8R sounds like the fail troll. I would say that you should definitely buy as expensive of a bike as possible, due to the possibility of picking up bishes on your sweet ride. You will want to feel good about yourself, and expensive things are a great way to do that. 8/24/2012 1:17:39 AM |
