Ok, I know it's not an identical situation to Katrina, hell it's barely even analogous to it, but I've seen tons of reports and heard some first hand accounts from people down there about how many folks are not going to evacuate.

Really?

How fucking stupid can you get? 7 years ago you assholes wouldn't leave and a bunch of people died, were trapped on roofs, and saw your entire city revert back to barbarism in a matter of weeks. So the next time a hurricane is tracking to hit your city you behave precisely the same way. Fucking-A.

"Angela Young, a resident of New Orleans East, which was hit particularly hard by Katrina and is still struggling to recover, says she has plenty of supplies - including food, batteries and non-perishable food - and intends to stay at home during Isaac."

Not to be unduly harsh, but if she dies it will be her own fucking fault.

They also have billions of dollars worth of flood prevention equipment that they didn't have seven years ago.

Well considering it was just upgraded to a hurricane, I don't blame them. This is not even close to being on the level Katrina was.

you are the king of arguing with yourself in the OP

this in no way is like Katrina for many reasons and I don't blame them for staying at all

How am I arguing with myself? I realize this isn't a category 3 storm, but that's not the point. Why would you ever not evacuate from a hurricane? What, are you going to stand there and hold your house together with your bare hands or bail the fucker out with a bucket as it floods?

It's not a logical mentality. You remain in a life threatening situation to what end?

I'm at work right now, close to a very busy street full of speeding cars. One could easily lose contr and crash through the window, killing me in the process. Better evacuate.

Has the OP ever experienced a hurricane from any city remotely close to the coast? Anything less than 60 miles I will consider remotely close.

Many people in the area can't afford to evacuate, especially for something that was upgraded from a tropical storm to a hurricane just this morning.

It's slow moving so flooding is a concern but the levees are greatly improved since Katrina (& I can speak from experience due to my line of work)

Also, there have been very few parishes (what we call counties) ordered to evacuate.

The people who live along the bayou in trailers will probably go to a family members house further inland or someone who has a house if they have that option.

Not everyone can afford gas, a hotel, time off work & food while on the road just for an exaggerated rain storm. And while we are at it, they get plenty of heavy rain anyway so this is probably just a little worse than normal.

^ great question. I'd love to hear the answer.

Nope, sure haven't.

Yes, I understand that there are some people who can't evacuate, but if you can why wouldn't you? Please, explain it to me. I guess what Wolfy posted is as good an explanation as can be had. Still makes very little sense to me.

pick your poison

the government nor anyone else should tell people whether to leave or stay

if there is enough of an exodus then open up both directions of a highway and make em exit only, but theres no reason to tell someone that they have to leave if they dont want

on the same token, we dont have to feel sorry for those who choose to stay behind and get injured or sick or dead. Theyre grown folks they choose what they do with themselves and their children. Hopefully this minor hurricane will kinda gie the engineers a gauge of how it will hold up in future storms and fix some issues that it might have.

Wolfy said it best as to why you wouldn't.

Also, there are usually options available for those to at least get to a safer shelter than their current living conditions if they can't evacuate.

Finally...a category 1 for those that do live near the coast usually doesn't raise more alarm than boarding or taping up windows and bunkering down with non perishables, plenty of water, flashlights/laterns/batteries, and maybe a generator if you got one. With family that has lived at the coast all my life, most only considered evacuating for a cat 2 or at least going to a neighbor or other family member's home that lives on higher ground. They always evacuated for a cat 3 or more.

the problem with this storm as i understand it is the fact that it's moving so slowly.

like, 8mph this morning.

that can create quite a lot of rainfall into an area that's prone to flooding.

i thought that was the impetus behind the evacuation warnings, not necessarily anything to do with it being category whatever hurricane.

[Edited on August 28, 2012 at 3:25 PM. Reason : comparing it to normal NC cat 1s doesn't really work.]

[Edited on August 28, 2012 at 3:28 PM. Reason : don't come to houston]

^^that's why i said *usually* because for the most part they don't. a slow moving one like this can definitely be an exception. but i would still say that most don't evacuate for a cat 1 here in NC or elsewhere.

Damage is also heavily dependent on the storm surge--depending on what side of the storm you are on when it makes landfall can cause a huge difference in the amount of sustained water the land is under.

Ivan in 2004 and Katrina in 2005 were just as bad for different parts of the Gulf.

There is no need to evacuate. Let them stay.

I am hoping some Darwin awards will be handed out when all is said and done.

Storm size/reported strength isn't always the best indicator of destruction. See Hurricane Isabel.

Its usually more about the storm's girth.

Exactly. Although we never evacuated for a cat 2 - we didn't even evacuate for Floyd or Fran (those are the worst I can remember off hand). Granted, it's different on the east coast - I can understand more people evacuating down here in the gulf for the simple fact that being east of the storm is terrible, whereas on the east coast we obviously don't have that kind of issue since it bounces up us. Anyway, the only people I understand evacuating for this are those near the beaches where there will be a storm surge (or in flood-prone areas).

I grew up in the Wilmington area and I currently vie in Kure Beach. I've sat through many tropical storms and hurricanes. A category 1 storm isn't shit. Hell, something that small rarely even knocks the power out around here.

If it's less than a cat 3 I normally stay at home with my family, friends and neighbors. We all help each other out. Board up windows, fill sand bags, secure loose objects, move furniture to the upper floors etc. etc. It is of great benefit to remain in your home because you can work to stop or divert water from entering your home and you will be there immediately after to begin repairing and rebuilding.

It's just kind of a normal thing here, I guess, to deal with hurricanes. Sometimes, it seems almost like a tradition. It's pretty neat to see all the generations of a beach community coming together to prepare for a storm.

Obama truly has done a spectacular job in his response to Hurricane Issac. To imagine just 7 years ago the shit storm President GW Bush made New Orleans go through... its a true testament to the greater good that Democrats have done to this country in all facets of life.
