the problem is the perception that people dont even try to get a job and live off the checks as long as possible.
most people collecting unemployment are earnestly looking for work. Shouldnt be ashamed to get help, but you should have the pride to get off it as soon as possible.

Yes I would as would anyone else eligible.
I do not identify with a particular party but since I lean slightly right of center (and with Republicans so far right on social issues it's scary) I'd probably be called a Dem by most. 8/29/2012 12:44:03 PM |

I just asked because a buddy of mine was laid off recently. He just told me about it today....
Anyway, I told him to file now for unemployment so as to reduce the lapse in pay. He told me "no, he didnt believe in it". He's an extremely conservative republican, and my only guess is that he doesn't believe in what he sees as a "handout"
I wonder if yous a hoe, if you can file for unemployment if yous not getting laid

basically he's a dumb fuck and didn't realize that he's actually paid into the account that funds his un-employment thus some of the money isn't "a hand out" but "a hand back" and will financially ruin himself because he think's its cool and noble? 8/29/2012 12:57:29 PM |

probably nothing to do with being cool and noble its just what the guy believes in

I was laid off from IBM, and I definitely did collect unemployment. Had no choice. Thankfully I did, because RIGHT before my unemployment was in effect, I got severely injured and couldn't walk for almost 8 months so that money was my only life-line. I had intended on getting another job somewhere after my last day....but couldn't.
It's different when people are fully capable of working and just choose to milk the government. 8/29/2012 12:58:56 PM |

1. Yes. I have paid into the system for well over a decade, and it's partially charged against the employer that laid me off. So, I would have no qualms about using UE to bridge the gap between jobs.
2. Republican affiliation. Libertarian leanings.

The government takes a lot out of my checks, so I would draw unemployment for as long as I needed to, but I would be actively looking for another job. I'd work at Walmart if I had to. I do have an emergency fund, but money can disappear quickly.
I'm unaffiliated. 8/29/2012 1:53:29 PM |

yea emergency funds i cant imagine ever last long because people are just going to try to maintain their current living standard more often than actually live bare minimum
cuz those mortgages are a bitch 8/29/2012 1:59:48 PM |

1. Yes, but only because I'm forced to pay for it when I've never utilized it. I would readily sign something saying I would be ineligible for any unemployment going forward if it meant I could stop paying for it going forward (same for SS though). All of our budgets, including safety budgets/emergency funds, are built around not using any unemployment so it wouldn't make a difference to me. We'd both have to be unemployed for a realllly long time before we missed a payment on anything.
2. Unaffiliated. Definitely not R or D though.

^^Well, we're pretty strict with budgets so I have a normal budget based off of both our incomes and then I have a safety budget setup for each scenario if just one of us is laid off and then an emergency budget setup in case we were both laid off.
I feel pretty confident that we would be able to make the changes to live within the tighter budgets because I already have the tighter budgets identified up front as far as what we would cut or change. Also, we save a lot, so some of the "cutting" comes from just saving more.
I think the key to being able to do it is identifying different budgets, or at the very least identifying the non-critical items in your main budget, before you ever get in that situation.

Never thought I would need it, but it was great, especially since I was laid off as a school teacher after being told for a month that I didn't have anything to worry about. It was enough for me to pay most of my mortgage and nothing else...it's not this luxurious handout that people like to make it out to be. 8/29/2012 4:30:20 PM |
