According to the site I lifted it from she brought her car in for an oil change and asked that they investigate a slight grinding sound under braking. After being told how badly they were messed up she declined to have them replaced, signed a waiver eliminating liability from the shop, and left. People like this are why the rest of us have to suffer through mandatory yearly inspections.

Spotted this the other day waiting to get on 40 at Gorman St. 1 out of 3 brake lights working and plates that expired 3/2011. I could care less about the plates, but working lights are kind of important.
I can't imagine getting away with that for very long around here. Hopefully they were just moving it in the day to get it worked on so they can get it back on the road properly.

Back it up to a garage door/wall, hit the brakes. It will be obvious if an entire side is out. If you really try you can put something on the brake pedal and go look, or just have a friend hit the brakes for you 9/14/2012 1:10:27 PM |

To renew their plates they'd have to get the car inspected and it would certainly be noticed then. Since the plates expired a year and a half ago this car probably hasn't been inspected in at least 2.5 years.

I envision a dash with all sorts of warning lights on that car. CEL, ABS light, brake light warnings, coolant low, oil, etc. It is a neglected VW after all.

Some people are single, ya know. (Or in my case have a fiancee who temporarily lives in a different state.)
The brick thing is a good idea that I'm surprised I never thought of. And yes, warning lights may either not work, not work reliably, or not be present. Of all the cars I've driven, I've only had two on which I could reliably expect that a warning light would come on when it should, and not come on just for the hell of it.9/14/2012 2:22:53 PM |

WTF, is that supposedly a vented rotor that has had one face worn completely off, down into the ribs?
I find that hard to believe. The steel backing of the pad would give way before you made it all the way through a face of a rotor, and how would it only wear away one side of the rotor that severely? 9/14/2012 11:00:00 PM |

I say passenger side with the caliper toward the rear and the tie rod toward the front.
When I bought my explorer the previous owners never had the brakes done. Pedal went to the floor. Replaced rotors and pads on the front. The rear discs (solid) were worn almost completely through... Like <.125". Steel backing plates on pads were worn through, pistons were what was clamping on the rotors. When I pulled the caliper the pistons were extended so far they fell out

You can see where the backing plate doesn't come close enough to the hub but yet the areas it doesn't touch haven't rusted over yet and are surprisingly worn down as much as the plate contact area.

^^ listen I know how the pad should ride.. On a flat surface made for friction material. On a surface like that I don't think the weak ass clips will keep the pad aligned for shit.
But if you look toward the left side it does appear the pad is no longer correctly aligned and is riding in the hub portion of the rotor consistent with the rotor wear pattern.
