What planes you got so far? And you using mouse or a joystick?

When I started out I was all about the dogfight and fighters. But lately I have found the bombers to be pretty damn cool. I love trying to sneak in at low level around the enemies and then start blowing their base to hell and back. Lots of fun indeed.

Yea I initially tried that mouse/keyboard combo and found it to be god awful. So I broke out my Sidewinder Precision 2 joystick and fired it up and found myself doing a LOT better. Wonder what the percentages are of people using joysticks/gamepads/mouse & keyboard in the game.

I sold my Sidewinder 2 a few months ago, thinking I'd never get into another flight sim again. FML. This flight sim is awesome!!! I'm sucking pretty bad, mostly because i'm trying to feather rudder (yaw) and roll while engaging other planes and it's not working, especially when I get too much yaw and not enough roll or visa versa.

Units are starting to slow down in the advancement now. But one reward is getting the new map, National Parks, which apparently does not start until you have Level V & VI aircraft.

Think I might be on IV for a while. However, my P-36 is getting close to the necessary XP. Money however is a different matter. I think the best craft at this level is the Bf109c. Go for that first.

I would really LOVE to see the P-38 Lightening. I don't know how that plane is not added in the tech tree, but perhaps it will be in the future.

Yea I was reading the FAQ and it says that they currently have 59 aircraft in closed beta, but are planning to have up to 100 aircraft from EACH country, with additional countries like Japan and Great Britain added as well. So I am sure that will be added to the US heavy fighter line.

Two things that get me though from my earlier flightsim days. What happened to Microsoft Sidewinder products, and where did all the Force Feedback gear go? I had a Sidewinder FF Pro that eventually died, but I LOVED playing with that. Added quite a bit of realism for takeoff and landing rolls, getting shot, turbulence, etc. But MS abandoned that whole genre, and nobody else seems to make anything Force Feedback anymore. Fucking blows. I would love to get something like that for this game.

FYI, has anybody been using the extend flaps feature any? On some of my earlier aircraft I did not think it worked, so even though I had a key mapped for it on my joystick I still did not use it. But I tried it again last night and saw it deploy the flaps properly, so I started using it and did a SHITLOAD better. In National Parks with my Bf109c (the first time I got that map in anything besides my P-36) which is now maxxed out, I proceeded to get 5 kills and about 3 damaged plans as well. I was doing SO much better when it came to turning in on guys.

I got bombed. I was making a bombing run with the Bf110B and was almost over the target when my plane just blew up. No enemies were near and I did not crash into anything. After looking at the scores another player on my team had -1 and I was the only dead guy. He was a 110B as well and wAs in the same area as me, so looks like I got bombed by a friendly.

Flaps are a huge bonus to turning - I typically fly without them to keep my speed up, but use them like mad to get the turning advantage in dogfights. I've tk'd with a bomb too, but I dropped it and a friendly flew too close to the target and got destroyed in the explosion. Bombs have a huge blast radius and deal tons of damage, so I have to wonder if they'll nerf them ultimately. I'm digging this game, but still learning to be delicate with the joystick or else I can't hold a target worth a damn.

Starting to get better with the keyboard and mouse, but it's still frustrating and tough.

Flaps ideal use is on strafing runs where you want to approach your target as slowly as possible, yet maintain enough lift that you don't fall out of the sky. Using rudder into a turn helps, but flaps? Maybe it's the drag factor slowing you down so you rotate in a tighter circle... but ideally, you don't want to use flaps in a turn :p

From an aerodynamics perspective, I have to agree with you - however, for whatever reason, flaps make aircraft in-game turn much faster, and they even have a tip that pops up every now and then telling you to use them to turn faster. Strange, but it works.

I typed this nice long post that I'm sure no one cares to read and tdub failed on me

Anywho. jist of it was I got the Tier 4 Messerschmitt bf 109c. It is so much better than the Ardo Ar 80. the 109 is a beast. I can't wait to try the T5 and T6 variants. I feel like I outclassed my opponents when dogfighting them, and i'm still using the keyboard/mouse combo! Definitely a very solid aircraft.

Something to keep in mind, I noticed my "garage" slots expand every time i buy a new airplane. So, just a thought, maybe we should keep all of our planes in our garage and hopefully we'll retain everything when the game officially releases. Then, when new planes that we actually want to fly are available/released, we can sell some of the ones we don't care for to make room. Just a thought...

Today I stalled a plane in a wierd way. I was in my US F3F and was climbing vertical to attack an enemy. I was determined to do as much damage as I could although I knew I would stall. I was at around 2,300 feet when I started to stall. I thought this was no biggie; plenty of altitude to recover an no other enemy planes nearby to attack me during this vulnerable moment. I stall out and start to drop when I noticed something really, really, strange. The plane was no longer responding to my controls. I just started to fall, like a brick for about 1,000 feet; tail first straight to the ground. Then the starboard wing started to tuck under the plane, which I thought was good because I could recover from this finally stall finally...

Nope.

I cartwheeled all the way down until I hit the water in the bay.

FML

Oh I rammed an enemy plane from behind (going maybe 2-3mph, came in behind it a bit too fast... ), destroying the enemy. I lived!!!!, though my engine was badly damaged...

I also destroyed an enemy because our wings clipped when I overshot a strafing run on him; my port wingtip clipped his starboard wingtip. He was at like 5% hp, and it killed him, just about destroyed me as well (100% down to about 35%).

Two collisions that killed the enemy but not myself. Woot.

About the flaps and turning thing, yea as a pilot I can see where that should not really work, but the games physics are obviously not 100% flight realistic. As much as anything else I like to use them in a turn just to not overshoot my target. Its a real pain in the enemies ass when they absolutely can't shake you, and I've had a few that I've had blow by me when I idle the engine and drop the flaps, who I can then drop in behind and blast out of the sky. As for stall control, it can get bad (even IRL) but I have never lost control of one like that.

The Bf109 is a monster Hiro. Wait until you upgrade the guns on that thing and it literally slices enemy aircraft to ribbons. I feel like I'm cheating in levels where I'm top dog flying against level II aircraft and a couple seconds of gunfire from the 109 brings them down. At level IV I have currently maxed out my Buffalo, P-36, & Bf109. The LBSh, BF110, and the I-16 late mod are almost fully upgraded as well. Once I get those finished up then its time to start grinding XP/cash to jump to level V. I am only a couple k XP away from the P-40, but I definitely need to save up cash. Thank God for that 200/gold a day.

And the P-40 upgrade path BLOWS. So you can add one upgrade to the wing weapons, but to get anymore upgrades you have to upgrade the airframe. To do that you have to drop the hub gun and upgrade the wing guns, again! Feels like a gut job.

You guys know you don't have to research any of the planes right? You just need money/credits right now to buy them. So you can "work up" the paths, but ultimately, you can save your monies and go straight for a Tier X aircraft

now affording them is another story...


If you notice, when you "research" the aircraft, the research cost isn't deducted from your balance. Just an FYI for you folks out there.

Hiro, I don't know what you are looking at, but I absolutely have to research the aircraft. I just double checked this morning to verify. When I had 450k, I could not buy any of the Lvl V aircraft, only the P-40 once I researched it. Maybe you need to check you version or perhaps report it as a bug to the dev team.

I just finished upgrading my Bf109C and it is absolutely wicked! It's so easy to fly and I can just destroy anything that ends up in my sights! Right now, I'm sitting on a collection of Tier 4s:

Yea, the P-36 upgraded has some good guns on it as well, and I could win more often than not, but it is not as beast as the Bf109C. That thing can outturn, outclimb, outrun, and outgun damn near anything in its class vicinity. My P-40 is anemic by comparison, but will be worth it when I score a P-51, I hope.

^^^ Yeah, I read that bit of info on the forum; could have been outdated info from an earlier version. BUT, the research points aren't spent on the new airplane, that still holds true (at least for me)

If you sell an aircraft and buy it back, the researched customizations are free, but you still have to buy the upgrades again. *sigh*.

Joystick is a blast, but the rudder input seems too low. The planes should react more with the rudder input. I mean, the controls aren't balanced quite evenly yet (my planes respond great to pitch, okay to roll, but there lacks a lot of rudder, imo.)

I think I'm going to work on the German Fighter line, then the US Fighter line...
Bombers seem to be the money makers here... I routinely get 40k credits for my bombing runs...

Okay wtf. I just researched another aircraft. It deducts from your total, but it isn't reflected until AFTER you purchase something else. For example, I was in the Russian I-15. I was going to upgrade it but was a couple hundred xp from upgrading to the next plane. So I played one more round and got the XP i needed, researched the next plane, and the xp balance still reflected the same amount. I went to fully research upgrade the I-15, but I didn't have enough XP so some of my Free XP was used to pay the difference.

FML.


TL;DR - Research xp not deducting is a bug.

Anywho. I'm 8:9 (wins:games played) in the 109C Fully upgraded. oh it's awesome.

Just tried out Pacific Aocean the fourth and final map in the beta. Really like that one. Survived the whole round in my P-40 and even won, scoring a kill on an F4U

I am having to call it and I am very pissed. Got a terribly busy weekend shooting a wedding and stuff, so I am not going to be back on my PC until Sunday evening. I am so pissed because I'm like 30k from being able to buy the damn Bf109E.

I did not notice you Hiro until the wrap up. I was reading my stats and saw that I had detected a Ghostcloak. Don't know if I killed or damaged you, as I didn't think about it until the screen cleared and I was like WTF that was Hiro!

Autocannons are hard hitting guns. They fire slower than machine guns, but have higher caliber rounds (ie: 20mm autocannon).

Anti Air is flak, afaik.

Machine guns have a high rate of fire, but are often smaller calibers (ie: 7.62mm, 10mm, etc).

My last round I flew my I-16 late mod and decided to try rockets on planes. I hit one enemy and damaged him. Little bit later I shot another one and killed one of my teammates who was trailing close to the enemy I was shooting at. Doh!
