The strip of wood that runs underneath my rain gutters is rotting in some places.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

And more importantly, who could I call to get some estimates to have the wood replaced?

I would start with searching home repair raleigh on google or looking on craigslist for carpenters, roofers or something. If thats not who does it then they would know who does. If you're handy and its not visable / you don't care then this can't be that hard to do yourself.

I had the same problem and got 4-5 quotes from companies with high reviews on Angie's List.

Rain-Go came in the cheapest, and I got new gutters to boot. They did nice quality work, cleaned up after themselves well, and were way easy to work with. You'll speak with the owner Tim most the time and he's easy to deal with.

^excellent, thanks! After working all day, I'm rarely in the mood to do any kind of detailed internet search, and I don't have much time to meet multiple people for quotes, so I think I might start with them, get a quote, and go from there.

I was going to say this, but you said ^ in response. I had a big piece of siding that was rotted from where rain would drip out of the gutter and splash up off the deck onto it. Got a matching piece from Lowes and had them paint match one of the older pieces. It only took me 30 minutes to replace it. The paint match isn't perfect, but undetectable unless you know to look for it. The whole project probably cost me about $20.

I also replaced my gutters with seamless, which has totally eliminated the problem all together.

Thanks for the help. What's this seamlless gutters that you speak of? I just googled it quickly, but any info would be appreciated.

All included removing all the gutters. one would remove the gutters, simply spot replace the rotted wood areas and install new gutters. The second option would spot replace the rotted areas, cover all the wood with aluminum trim, and install new gutters. The third and luxury option would be to remove all the wood and replace it all with non-rot PV material, and install the new gutters.

I'm leaning towards the third option so I won't ever have to worry about it in the future.

But again, I want a second quote, anyone else had a company do this for them, or know of any that do it? Thanks!

seamless gutter companies bring big rolls of sheet metal and a machine that makes gutters of the exact length required on-site. you don't have to worry about leaky seams. seamless is the only way to go on gutters imo.

i'd go with the second option. get them wrapped in aluminum. most of my family has gone this way and it looks nice and lasts.

And if you are replacing the gutters, definitely go seamless. It isn't that much more expensive, and definitely will save you $$$ in the long run. As NRR said, I don't know why anyone would do anything other than seamless at this point.

Damn he didn't give me any of those items...maybe he could tell I wanted it done cheap...so I was only offered the first option and a second that was the first + a gutter helmet system. What were the price ranges of your quotes? How much rotten wood do you have and how big is your house?

Mine was around a grand and i have a 1400 square foot house and had some pretty extensive rot issues. Lots of fascia boards and soffit repairs...major damage was only like 1/3 of total gutter run.

I'd contact a roofer, because whoever does the replacement work is going to have to remove and reinstall the gutters in the process (unless you replace them too)

thanks, any more suggestions? i'm taking this slow and not jumping into anything, because i have more than this to do on a limited budget.

my next question will be about painters, particularly patching and painting stucco. Anyone have any experience?

don't do any work on your house, you won't recover it when you sell. housing prices are going to fall more in the kind of neighborhood where you live.
