Hi I'm a senior in college of management, I registered for all my classes early in the semester but for some stupid reason caused by my friend resulted in me dropping eng 332, I could not add it back. I contacted my advisor and the eng dept, both said there's nothing they can do. So far in wait listed as #2 in two eng 332 online sessions with dr Pittman. I really need this class to graduate in may . What are my odds of getting in? And advice would be highly appreciated. 11/8/2012 4:07:48 PM |

Let me plug this into my waitlist probability calculator and I'll let you know. It would be helpful to know if these are early/mid/late morning or afternoon classes. 11/8/2012 4:30:39 PM |

You'll probably get in. Each wait list is different, but 2nd in line is usually a god bet. In the mean time, research what alternative classes can meet your requirements so you're not caught unprepared in case you can't get in. Also look into alternate sections.
For the record, your advisor can't do a thing about your class registration. That's not something your average faculty member has any involvement in.
If you haven't got into the class by the week before classes start, contact the instructor. There's not a lot of point contacting them earlier. They'll likely tell you to just wait and see. 11/8/2012 5:28:59 PM |

Email the professor now. Go to the class anyways even if you're not registered so that when someone does drop it you can get added. Have your adviser make a few calls. If you need it to graduate people will help if you just ask them instead of TWW. 11/8/2012 7:40:27 PM |

thanks for the reply so far, as i mentioned, both classes are "online" if it's in class , i wouldn't be too worry about it. Since i don't think people drop online classes that often... Also, i've also contacted the professor, she told me to refer to the english dept. It's basically a cycle of referring and pointing fingers at this pont.

^ Ms. Pittman is listed as a lecturer on the english department's website. This means that she is probably a contract instructor and not normal faculty. She is referring you to the english department because she likely has no direct control over class enrollment. Go, in person, to the department office, find out which administrator handles things like class scheduling and enrollment, and see if the class size can be increased or if you can be force-added. They may tell you to wait. Spring semester doesn't start for almost 8 weeks and they aren't worrying about it yet. They still have the end of this semester to deal with. Whatever you do, be polite and don't plead with the staff. The moment you become annoying is the moment they stop wanting to do you any favors.
Honestly, I would wait until December before I started bothering anyone with this. Let the wait list play out. You would be surprised at how much people shuffle their classes around after their initial registration. When I was an undergrad, I once found myself in the 17th spot on a wait list for a class. It took less than a week before I was added into the class. 11/9/2012 1:34:30 AM |

According to my calculations, you have a 71.2% chance of being enrolled into the class. 11/9/2012 8:28:58 AM |

Good point, I missed that. In that scenario I would still attend another physical English class that ligns up with your schedule and notify the professor of what you're trying to do in order to graduate on time. It would be worth my time for the possibility of having that backup in place. 11/10/2012 12:17:49 PM |

Just wanted to say that I had Dr. Pittman for 331 (same class but for engineers so slightly different project at the end) and she was really nice about trying to squeeze seniors in. I think we had 2 or 3 extra people in our class trying to take it (it was a physical class) and they all made it. So if one of her daytime classes is open in your schedule I would try going to it and see what happens.
It looks like it's still structured the same as a few years ago so the first assignment (just a simple memo) isn't due for a week or two so you'll have time to see whats going on before you have to do any major work that you possibly wont get credit for) I know we had a girl who switched to the scientist section without any problems so they seem pretty flexible.
You should ask your dept if they will accept one of the other flavors of this course if you really cant get in. Eng 331, 332, and 333 are all almost identical except for that final group project which is geared more at being interesting to specific majors.
It's probably like others said and they are just trying to deal with stuff going on this semester. I would wait till after fall graduation to try contacting people. There should still be offices open on campus after that. (I know the shop where I work is operating till the 23rd) They should also be open about a week or so before the first classes of spring.

One of wait listed online class is moved from "2" to "1" on the list. And the other one is still at 2. I'm having a pretty high hope not, going to cross my fingers on this one.
But regardness, thanks everyone for helping. 11/14/2012 11:24:45 PM |

Rain can't stop you!
Usually these situations fix themselves. It's tough for an advisor or the school in general to stand by the claim "sorry, class was full that semester, so you can't graduate"11/15/2012 3:47:27 PM |

#1 on the waitlist I'd be surprised if you don't make it in. But I'd be in contact with the professor about seeing if it's possible to do the work for the time before add/drop finishes in case you're not bumped into the class by then. I feel like you always have at least one or two people drop the class after the semester has started and they've decided the class isn't what they want. 11/19/2012 3:13:34 PM |
