RALEIGH, N.C. — The House and Senate haven't even gaveled in yet to begin their work for the year, but three constitutional amendments have already been filed in the House for consideration in this legislative session.
House Bill 6, "NC Right to Work/Secret Ballot Amendments," would add the state's "right to work" law to the constitution" |
Quote : | " "These amendments are a ridiculous waste of taxpayers’ time and money. Legislative leaders should instead focus resources on job creation and economic growth. North Carolinians need jobs not ballots full of unnecessary amendments designed to turn out conservative voters and generate more corporate campaign contributions."" |
I remember some Dems protesting the DNC being in Charlotte calling North Carolina the "least unionized state in the country." So I can see how cracking down on unions would be a priority...
Honestly, it reminds me of amendment 1 last year, a lot of money being spent over an amendment fight on something that's already banned by law anyways.1/30/2013 4:55:22 PM |

Hey, when there is zero accountability and checks and balances, then why not?

This would simply put it to a vote for the people, right? What's the problem then? Sounds like a check and balance. Wonder if this will pass as easy as Amendment 1. 1/30/2013 9:24:28 PM |

The constitution set us up as a republic for a reason...
The founding fathers knew of the tyranny of the masses, Plato knew of it, and it still exists today.
Not to mention that Unions have been shrinking for the past few decades, the corporations are far more powerful and wealthy now. They're going to have more resources on their end. It's not really "democratic" when money buys a vote.
A good way to increase poverty and decrease wages is to allow corporations to pay people dirt, with impunity.
We all benefit from unions at least being allowed, whether we're in a union or not.
Not to mention that I can't imagine such an amendment wouldn't violate the 1st amendment of the US constitution.

Yeah, we should spend legislators time and tax payer dollars double banning everything that is already against the law in the constitution.
These constitutional amendments are a joke. It's a choice between double ban and single ban, not a choice between ban or not ban. The people aren't actually getting to decide.

Yeah I'm not seeing the point of such an amendment. The right to work laws don't violate the state constitution right? So why the need to modify the constitution? What does burning this political capital gain anyone? 1/30/2013 10:26:26 PM |

We're one month closer to deciding whether or not people can't assemble into unions, or they super-can't assemble into unions (since neither outcome of the vote would change the law).
I expect it's just an effort to drive more conservative voters to the polls, because NC hasn't drifted far enough to the right yet.
It seems like these legislators are never happy unless they're constantly playing with the constitution. 2/27/2013 7:48:04 PM |

And by doing so, they undermine the legitimacy of the Constitution.
While we're talking about amendments, were you aware that Amendment One only passed by 13% of the people of NC? Yet another reason why I can not wait for SCOTUS to strike down DOMA and begin the unraveling of such an atrocious stain on North Carolina history. (And no, I don't equate 3/4 of the states to ratify US Amendments to 3/4 of NC counties... ) 2/27/2013 8:01:02 PM |
