i picked up a motorola 6141 (8x4 version of the 6121) DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem for $65 (?topic=611287#15722892) to replace the SB5101 DOCSIS 2.0 that i was getting billed $3.50 (or $4 or whatever) per month to rent

called up TWC tech support, they added it to my account, and i was good to go

i did a speedtest while the SB5101 was in use and was getting about 30Mbps/1Mbps (which is about right for "standard" service)...after the switch, i'm consistently getting 15Mbps/1Mbps

both before and after, i tested it on a wired machine and a wireless one...same results, both before and after, on each unit

my next step is to call up TWC to see if they downgraded my service somehow (they asked if i wanted to upgrade to "turbo" or whatever, and i declined)...but i don't have the ability to wait on hold with a CSR right now, so i thought i'd ask you guys if you thought there was any chance it's a hardware issue...i don't see how it could be, but that's why i'm making the thread

I once bought a DOCSIS 3 modem and connected it to my Time Warner Cable internets; it didn't work that well, I returned it, and then I was no longer grandfathered into the free-modem program

I have the SB6141 and my internet speed was 50/5 before I replaced it and 50/5 right after. 15mbps isn't even close to the limit that modem is capable of so it shouldn't have anything to do with the hardware itself.

One of the reasons I haven't done it is that I'm getting speeds way faster than I'm supposed to be getting. Don't want to call attention to that.

According to that, if you didn't upgrade to turbo, you are only supposed to be getting 15mbps with standard. Why you were getting 30mbps before is what I would want to know.

uh...oops

i was definitely getting 30Mbps...i left the speedtest results up on my computer for comparison

it's what i had always been getting, so it's what i thought i was supposed to be getting...i'd be more upset if i actually made use of it, but i really don't

we pay less than $70/month for HD service with some bonus channels (not sure which ones, it came with the deal), standard RR, and a DVR, so 15Mbps is probably right

still...oops

FYI, there is some weird occurrence with cable modems on the TWC network where a hard reset will allow the device to get very high download speeds for a short period of time. It would eventually even out. Perhaps that is what you are running into.

I mention this because my numbers were similar to yours. I got around 30Mbps right after start and then a few hours later I checked again and found it was 10-15Mbps.

^ interesting

although my problem is that i got 30/1 on the old SB5101...i called them up, told them i got a new modem (the 6141) and they activated it on my account...i swapped them out and immediately got 15/1

given what Azaka posted (and i never thought to look up), they probably just set my service to match my billing

a little disappointing, but i would have done it anyway...heck with that $4/month screw-you-for-being-a-customer fee

The lack of high speeds on speedtest could be because Time Warner chooses not to support "Power boost" on DOCSIS 3 modems. So the old modem was probably able to use "power boost" to make internet speeds look great for 20-30 second tests.

This is what I found when I was buying my 6141:

The 6141 is a much more stable modem, but that means speeds don't spike up.

^Fuck that explains so much of my problems with my TWC turbo right now. Always gives me 30mbps on speed tests but actual usage seems to indicate it being way lower, inconsistent (often patchy connection), et cetera.

So glad I'm in Suddenlink's territory. Paying 55/month for 50/3 with a $50.00 D3 modem from Arris.
