This is probably better suited to Tech Talk than The Lounge; that being said, it depends greatly on where you live. 4/3/2013 9:35:24 PM |

there are always satellite internet options, ie HughesNet, even if you live on the outskirts of Bumfuck 4/3/2013 9:40:58 PM |

You could probably double, maybe triple that DSL speed with a 3G wireless card. (nobody down there has 4g that I could find) AT&T would work if you are on the 421 side of Currie, Verizon has better coverage and better plan prices. I would try to borrow some phones if you don't have AT&T/Verizon and go see how the coverage and data speeds are in that area if this interests you. Even for $50/month you would only be getting 8GB with Verizon and you would probably not be able to stream anything over 480i if you could even stream that. I wouldn't call it decent but maybe marginally better than DSL. 4/3/2013 10:34:46 PM |

i've got coverage with verizon up there. i'm still clinging to my unlimited data plan with verizon. i've been tethering mon-fri while i'm away from home. last month i used over 8 GB and she used 1.7 GB. tethering is fine until my phone shits the bed and i've gotta give up the unlimited data. 4/3/2013 10:47:49 PM |

My parents still have the legacy alltel unlimited plan and a Mifi 2200 which is pretty much the only option there other than satellite. Service still sucks there though and cuts out so much that you can't really do any streaming.4/3/2013 11:18:52 PM |

Verizon is pretty much the only option for folks in rural areas. 4/4/2013 3:45:19 PM |

It depends on your coverage. I had strong 3G signal about 4 years ago, consistent 100ms pings / 150KB/s downloads. 2 years ago it went to crap and I've switch to Satellite since b/c I got sick of dropping into 1xRTT with 16KB/s and 1000mis+ ping times when the 3G signal dropped out.
For Satellite, 2MB/s downloads on Steam, about 1MB/s everywhere else. 700ms ping times on average. Cost is high. Worth it for us. Ping me if you want more details.
Go with the DSL to start out, then switch to something else afterwards once you talk to neighbors, coworkers, etc. who live out there.4/4/2013 7:22:20 PM |

when i said verizon was the only option for rural areas, i meant with regards to cell phone coverage. i get in some pretty remote places working, hunting, fishing, etc. verizon is the best option i've found for someone who spends the vast majority of their time outside of cities and off major highways/interstates.

i think this is a good strategy. i'm going to PDAnet it to start with. i've talked to co-workers who live in the area. some of them have u-verse and others have decent DSL. most of them have Time Warner. TWC covers pretty much everywhere out there except my development, probably because there are only 6 houses in there. i'm less than 1/4 mile from hwy 421, so i'm guessing they'll run cable in there eventually. once i get moved in next week, i'll talk to the neighbors and see what they do.
if i have to go satellite, i'll just do hughesnet and not worry about cable/satellite tv. hughesnet says "Unlimited*". what does the * mean?4/4/2013 7:47:58 PM |

Just moved back to raleigh, near campus, are there any decent options other than TWC? I only need Internet, no cable or phone, but I do want to be able to stream movies and play video games online without any trouble 10/4/2013 11:44:41 AM |

Being in the middle of the city you probably have your pick of a half dozen decent options, probably TWC or U-verse would be the best bang for the buck for high speed (and stable) internet. 10/5/2013 1:26:33 PM |

uVerse and TWC are going to be your main options.
I have just internet through TWC (30down/5up). I haven't had any need to contact them other than to set it up. I actually get 30 down on speed tests, and i get 5up... sometimes a little higher.
I had cable and internet for the past 10 years until June (through TWC). When I switched in June, TWC was a little better deal then uVerse. That was partially because I was already a TWC customer though. 10/6/2013 3:01:27 PM |
