Football is right around the corner, kind of. This is always a very interesting topic to me. As a lifetime ncsu fan from a pack family, it's hard for me to fairly assess the perception of our football program on a national level. Rank the following programs from most prestigious to least (my list is in no order).

NCSU
University of Colorado
Kansas State
University of Kansas
University of Washington
Pitt

^^I'm with you on Kansas State. They've had some recent success, but I'd put them pretty close to NCSU on the national level because they don't have the history. Seems the consensus top 3 are there because of success between the 70's-90's, with a national championship or two.

Yea, KState wasnt just average or bad before Snyder, they were god awful, like maybe one of the top 10-15 worst teams in the country.

It's easy really. We have zero perception on a national level.

I was actually going to post that I felt my 3/4 were interchangeable.

Colorado more history, KState more relevant in athletics in general over past 10 years. I tend to be a big Snyder fan so I think that swayed me.

Ultimately if the OP was posting this because you were arguing we are higher up on that list than I think you got your answer.

As a guy familiar with the program but who has friends that love college football and are NOT familiar with the program (and are NOT just Tennessee fans, or even southern football fans), I could give you an objective, honest summary of how State is perceived outside of fans of the program... but you all would call it trolling if it wasnt what you wanted to hear (not saying it will or wont be)

National perception right now, including morons.

Kansas State clearly one.
Washington
Pitt
NCSU
Colorado
Kansas

Historically, Pitt is the easy choice for one.

^^Your bitching about people bitching before they bitch is tiresome (welcome back by the way). Just contribute to the conversation by letting us know what you've seen.

Growing up in NC, I can say we're not very prestigious. Of those programs, I, too, would put us above only Kansas, but that may be close given that they won a BCS game in 2007.

You have to acheive something, reach certain heights, to acheive prestige. With one 10 win season and no major bowl apperances, NC State's not going to fare well. Even during our years of winning numerous ACC titles in the early 60s, our overall record was hovering around .500. Our top bowl win was the Gator Bowl. There is nothing prestigious about NC State football.

That said, we haven't ever really been terrible for long stretches. We're generally average or above average in the ACC. A number of programs who have reached higher have also spent plenty of time as bottom dwellers. I think State would do better if you just ask who has a better football program rather than who has a more prestigious one.

Colorado won a national title and were nationally relevant for at least a decade. They have a Heisman Trophy winner. It's hard to see putting them last.

If you're talking about who has the better program now, we'd be above Colorado. But they have more prestige.

yeah, no way Colorado is last. If we are talking about current program level then yeah, but as for presitge (which I always took to mean if there was a nuclear war, and 1000 years later some aliens landed and discovered a vault containing every game ever played in either print or video format, and they found this game to be really similar to their game of Starlax5000, and they looked over the entire history of the sport, where would they rank the teams), Colorado definitely isnt at the bottom with a Natl Champ and a Heisman.

now, as for State. Most of my non State fans knew nothing about them at all before Rivers except that they always seemed to play FSU tough. Then Holt got into the greatest show on turf and Rivers came along and that was a huge boost, but it was almost viewed as a one off, offensive gimmick, kind of similar to a Tulsa, Hawaii, etc. because they always seemed to win or lose games 45-40 etc., but they had a feeling that State was really close to taking that next step. When TA came along things were like HOLY SHIT. I still say TA was the best college freshman RB I had ever seen in person (with Jamal Lewis being #2 of course). But when he fizzled out/got hurt, and Rivers left they were all like "eh nice story, probably wont hear from them much again" and the momentum died. And the last 6-8 years havent really helped. Even the great defensive year was kind of ignored because Rivers and TA set the bar so high at the key positions and there wasnt anywhere to go after that.

But, I think they still underestimate the program as all of them that I have taken to games have been like "holy shit, how do they have a stadium this nice? who pays for it? its small, and out in the middle of nowhere but really nice, the crowd is really good too, great tailgating" So in summary, 10 years ago they were viewed as the hot new upstart that came out of nowehere, a good story, great teams, great innovative play calling but then they never moved on up so now they are an afterthought (or "that Jimmy V school") unless the person actually gets into Raleigh for a game and then they realize its better than they perceived.

I think Pitt is one of the most overrated teams historically. Most of their historical success is pre-WW2. They have one totally legit title in 1976, the rest you can pretty much ignore.

Yeah, you really can't put a team with a natty (even if questionable) on their record dead last behind a team who has no natties, much less any #1 rankings ever

K-State is clearly the best and most relevant team over the last 25 years. Washington is way better than most people remember (UW in the 90s was nasty) and Colorado actually has a title in the last 30 years, but almost nothing else to speak of other than a lot of historical wins because they've played for a long time.

Kansas has always been shit, and NCSU hasn't done shit either. Those are clearly the bottom 2.

KState was also a horrible program up till 25 years ago. When talking this type of thing everyone has their own opinion but in my thought they haven't been so much better the past 25 years than UW or Pitt to offset just how bad they were

FSU sucked before Bowden.

You guys are talking about 25 years like it's not a lot of time or something.

I'd go

K-State
Colorado
Washington
Pittsburgh
NCSU
Kansas

I fully expect it to return to mediocrity when he retires again

K State is possibly the worst program on the list. The only challenger is their in state rival. They were easily one of the worst programs in college football history before Bill Snyder and when he left the first time around they were awful again.

A long term coach having success can raise the profile of a program but that didn't happen there.

Bowden got FSU into the ACC and they have Florida recruiting to work with.

K State is going to be the UConn of the Big 12 if it collapses and their only recruiting ground worth anything is Butler Community College.

The better ACC program to compare them with is Va Tech, if VT was in a conference with ECU and only had backwoods Virginia to recruit from instead of Va Beach and Richmond.

Didn't Colorado finish #2 or #3 in like 2002 or 2003??

The year they SMASHED Nebraska by like 50 and everyone was pissed CU didn't get invited to the title game?

That season alone is far better than our best ever.

^ and started their program in 2005

They finished in the AP Top 10 four times in the last 20 years, six times in the last 30. Not terrible at all.
1989: 4
1990: 2 (coaches poll, 1)
1994: 3
1995: 5
1996: 8
2001: 9 (last time they finished ranked in the top 25)

It was 2001like and people were pissed that Nebraska played Miami over Oregon (who was clearly theplexi #2 team) and Colorado. Colorado had 2 losses in the regular season and got their shit pushed in in their bowl game, by Oregon. They finished that season ranked 9th.

Oh, and that 1990 title is a giant fucking joke.

Our football prestige really isn't great. Ahead of Kansas, Duke, Wake (some may argue, but they'd be wrong), Iowa State (?), Indiana, Wazzou (?), Vandy and Kentucky...

Is that accurate? Talking AQ schools so none of the AAC nonsense I'm including.

^ doesn't matter. So has UConn and Wake. Not more prestigious programs though.

It certainly isn't great. But, we have a fairly decent bowl history (when it meant more) compared to other mediocre programs. Look up South Carolina's pre-Spurrier, lol.

I have us ranked at 29 outright in terms of bowl appearances from this list. (tied for 21st with a couple schools for wins)

there is no way that the bottom 2 on this list isnt NCSU and KU.

no way.

although in my research, i found out that NC State holds the record for tackles for loss in a single game, with 23 vs FSU in 2004. Arizona State tied the record in 2009 though.

also, that just brought back memories of that shit game. we lost. ugh.
