I have messed with this hw for over an hour and this is a last resort for me. I don't know if I'm overthinking it, or I'm just mentally exhausted or what, but here it goes.....
I need to get y by itself:
(5p/3)y + y = 1
*It doesn't look that hard, but I can't figure it out to save my life, hopefully somebody out there can show me how. 4/19/2013 9:31:58 PM |
StillFuchsia All American 18941 Posts user info edit post |
(5p/3 + 1)y = 1 to simplify y, instead of having it across two terms
divide by (5p/3 + 1) to give:
y = 1/(5p/3 + 1)

I'm missing the connection on why you got rid of one of the y's on your first step. The last step makes sense, though. 4/19/2013 10:34:21 PM |

^ (5p/3)y + y = 1
factor out y
y(5p/3 + 1) = 1
the question remains, however, on how you made it into college without being able to perform basic algebra?

Well, the problem that I was working on was telling us to do it in a much different way, which is why I wasn't even thinking about this particular way. Having said that, there's no need to be a douche and try to judge my intelligence by a single post on a thread. You're probably some engineering or math nerd.....kudos to you, but my strength is in the business and accounting realm. I'm not such a douche to talk down to a fellow student who has a random brain fart about something basic in business or accounting.......that's the UNC way.......you're better than that. 4/19/2013 10:47:32 PM |

Quote : | "math nerd.....kudos to you, but my strength is in the business and accounting realm" | lol not rly, math is fundamental to accounting, and this manipulation does not require "nerd" levels of understanding
Now what is this "much different way" of which you speak?
As for ndmetcal, the official requirements do say that an applicant needs to have taken Algebra I-II and two other math classes (this is freshman admission, but transfer admission requires at least "a college-level math course" in addition, and for the School of Management, you need calculus to transfer in): http://admissions.ncsu.edu/how-apply/admission-profile/get-in.php ...but then there's this non-credit remedial class called MA 101: http://www2.acs.ncsu.edu/reg_records/crs_cat/MA.html#MA 1014/20/2013 1:09:57 AM |

Which would be...?
The only other way than factoring is to combine the coefficients of the two terms on the left so you get one term, i.e., add 5p/3 and 1. That is (5p+3)/3.
so your equations becomes
(5p+3)y/3 = 1
and so
y = 3/(5p+3)
But if you do it with factoring, you still have to do the same thing on the other side.
so it is all the same.
SO, WHAT IS THIS "MUCH DIFFERENT WAY"?4/21/2013 6:49:24 AM |

you could also go another route (not using the distributive property) to get to the same result:
(5p/3)y + y = 1
divide both sides by y:
5p/3 + 1 = 1/y
then take the inverse of both sides:
1/(5/3p + 1) = y

No, the first response was truly helpful and I'm appreciative. I had a brain fart.......that's it. It happens to the best of us and yes the guy was being a douche, because he felt the need to pounce. By the way, I wasn't referring to him as an engineering nerd because his strength is math, I referred to him as one because I've found that engineering majors tend to be the ones on these posts being douche-like. I guess I'm just amazed at the immaturity of a person to come on here looking to basically bully somebody over one question they had.....it's pretty pathetic to judge so quickly and harshly....that's my point. 4/21/2013 10:34:05 PM |
