Let's talk about 'realistic' car values for things like.... my 91 civic sedan. Autotrader/craigslist has some fairly high pricing posted for civic & like vehicles... like $4k for cars with ~200k miles. It appears that people are asking more for them now, but are they selling at that price?

Here's mine:
- 91 civic sedan dx; 1.5/5-sp/no ps
- drivetrain maintained, 214k miles. (~20-30k miles on timing belt & water pump)
- ac recently went out (severe leak)
- water leaks in trunk when we get hellacious rain
- new tires ~1500 miles ago
- new front struts & springs earlier in 2013

Thoughts on value? I'll withhold my opinion until a few posts are achieved.

I wouldnt pay more than $1200 for it.

no power steering would suck...and no AC in the summer heat.

water leaking = rust

no history as far as the engine goes and any issues it has had or NOT had.

it is a beater! however no power steering was a factory specification, btw. It doesn't really 'suck' per-se, but the feel is totally different than normal.

yeah i think 1k for anything that runs reliably

2k for something that everything works right on

and after that it has to have desirable traits other than running.

What kind of shape is the paint in? (I would imagine pretty bad).

I don't think $2000 is unreasonable, especially if its on its 2nd clutch. That car will last forever.

top of cab is more or less gone, hood and trunk are going; I've replaced the clutch 2x since I've had it. Once after replacing transmission (fragged spider gears), and once around 2010.

I'm not really out to try to up-sell the thing, just curious.

I'd ask 3000 for it, probably get 2200-2500.

it's a civic.

since this thread has been a success in my opinion - here's my estimated value: Post for $1500, settle for ~$1200.

I'm I do believe that was a joke. Possibly mocking garage for saying something is worth more than any if us would actually cough up our own money for it.

It was a joke, I don't need a beater, I just need to put my beater back together

(unless you'll take $450 for it today?)

^^ lol that doesn't mean your car isn't worth that... just means we're a combination of cheap bastards and people who like to take advantage of people who don't know cars.. (i don't mean selling lemons or anything just... making a buck or two)

Id honestly ask 1800 for it if you are willing to settle for 1200

you will get lots of lowballs and if you start out a little higher you might hit on that price.

Theres not a ton of difference in 1800 and 1500 when talking prices.

True...

Then at some point you start realizing that things like a set of cheapest coilovers is the same price as intercontinental flight and the money you spend on revamping your suspension totally can buy you a 10-day trekking trip in New Zealand. This is why I tend to leave cars stock unlike 6-7 years ago.

or you realize anything you could add to the car is likely to be some half ass shit because the rest of the car wasn't built with it in mind.

^eh, different strokes.

most all modifications are half-assed when viewed with the purest of engineering sense; so I just say fuck it and roll on.

Man posts "MINT 86 MR2 For $3,450" on Clist.

I go check it out...

Struts are shot
Front tie rod ends are shot...
clutch M/C is leaking like crazy. dripping in driver floorpan and the front trunk area. It's gonna be hell cleaning it all up.

Rust all along the rear bumper underneath, and a nice rusted hole the size of my fist on the rear passenger wheel well.

NO AC

THIS ISN'T MINT!!!!

Did have a nice new exhaust, no leaks, new economy tires.

I actually meant equity. I have 5 cars paid for and they are worth a pretty penny. Then y'all go down some I'm cooler than you cause I don't mod my car path and for the most part I agree but then I also think its boring to drive a car that is exactly as fast as it was published to be.

I pretty much love everything I've done to my cars because after my jeeps I really think them through asking the " do I want to listen to rattles in the suspension or the loud hum of tires?

Most everything with the galaxie is for reliability/drive ability and will increase the value of the car. Which is pretty much the reason I quit working on the Subaru I was considering spending 7k to finish the car that will still only be worth maybe 7 k.
