wtf Alabama and Mississippi? Still living in the stone age eh?
Anyone know a guy name Joshua Katz in the statistics department? He came up with all this stuff. Also, who the fuck refers to a water fountain as a "bubbler?"

First off. OP, I recently move to AL and currently working in Huntsville. Haven't heard anyone say "the devil is beating his wife", maybe not long enough to hear it yet.
and Quote : | "Also, who the fuck refers to a water fountain as a "bubbler?"" | New Englanders. I have two co-workers from MA and RI, use 'Bubbler' as a water fountain.

Also, looking over these and considering the way I pronounce things, it's abundantly clear that I was raised in NC by parents from Jersey. My pronuncations split neatly between the two.6/5/2013 5:34:26 PM |

I have said "the devil is beating his wife" all my life when it rains when the sun is out (not from alabama nor mississippi...eastern NC). posted a picture with that caption the other week sparking a conversation of idioms people use for "sunshowers."

I had a debate with two roommates once that Cary, carry, and Kerry were three different words. They disagreed. This was printed when I asked who john Carey was, when my roommate was referenced john Kerry... ( it was well after the election and out of a political context, and he pronounced it like cary)
This explains. I'm from new jersey

I've had the same argument after a friend insisted that the girl's name Kerry and the city of Cary were pronounced identically. For me, not so much. It's the Jersey parents.6/5/2013 9:26:58 PM |

My girl teases me about this. I say "on" somewhere between "awn" and "own."
Also, swimming pool and and pull on a rope are identical "pull."
Apparently, I don't accent TV correctly. While most say, "tee-VEE," I tend to say "tee-vee" or "TEE-vee."
I blame my dad being an army brat and comm major (neutral accent + an insistence on proper enunciation). All that prescriptivism and correction conflict with Mom's Virginian speech.

Ya, I basically say things like I spent the afternoon at the swimming pull. I don't know why, but anything else sounds odd to me.
When I hear other people say "on," it sounds like "ahn." High vowel, short n. Own is distinct because it's a low vowel with a long n sound, so I guess I say it similar to the vowel sound in "caught" (but not cot) and with a long n sound at the end. 6/6/2013 9:50:26 AM |
